00:00It's one of the brightest beams in Earth's sky and the fourth planet away from the Sun
00:05and it's been transported to Rochester Cathedral thanks to NASA technology.
00:11Mars War and Peace captures the look of the red planet with a sound composition by BAFTA winner Dan Jones
00:19which fuses seas, deserts and NASA missions on Mars alongside bombings and war marches.
00:27Did you know that Mars got its name from ancient Romans who named it after their god of war
00:34because the iron oxide dust of the planet looks like blood.
00:39The main focus of this exhibit is to get the public to think about the impact of conflict
00:45under the backdrop of a red wasteland and the peaceful environment of a cathedral.
00:51There are so many tragic wars across our planet and so we hope that on the way out
00:59while they're here people may reflect on that, maybe go and light a candle to
01:04remember some place where there's conflict and to pray for peace.
01:09So yeah we hope people will reflect on that as well.
01:12For us obviously as a Christian church we're very involved in peace,
01:15you know that's the message that we want to send.
01:17Mars for millennia has been identified with war.
01:22We have lots of conflict in the world, we'd like to draw people's attention to that
01:26and try and encourage people to seek peaceful resolutions to whatever conflicts there are.
01:30You know Mars is so far away from us and yet we're being able to see it close up, it's quite special.
01:38It's really atmospheric with the music and the kind of sounds that they've got in the
01:43background as well as the lighting in the evening is really special.
01:46I was expecting it to be larger than this, I was expecting it to be redder than this.
01:52Mars is always described as a red planet
01:56but it's absolutely incredible to see all the scars and the craters.
02:01I knew very little about Mars and I'm learning a lot about it so it's a great place,
02:07it's great to have this display and it's a fantastic venue for that as well,
02:12it's just such a beautiful cathedral.
02:14Mars War and Peace will be at Rochester Cathedral until the 8th of March.
