00:00The original Gothic was so popular and so unique at the time that I feel like it deserves
00:16a proper remake.
00:47Our approach was first and foremost to respect and embrace the original vision behind the game.
00:54We studied the original vision, we tried to understand everything what they were trying to say,
00:58what they were trying to convey, and we just thought about, okay, this is a remake,
01:04that's the first thing the fans should have to do.
01:07We are not trying to reinvent the wheel or to do something crazy with the Gothic franchise,
01:11I mean this is a remake.
01:12We embrace, we honor the original vision and we just try to approach there with the utmost respect.
01:19After so many years, and actually after quite a short time after the release of Gothic 1,
01:24when I look back at the music that I've done back then,
01:27I kind of always find the things that I would have loved to improve.
01:31If I had more time, I would have thrown things away and replaced them with other ideas.
01:37So that constant, you know, striving and drive to make everything better,
01:43now I get a second chance, so I can return to my music that I wrote back then
01:47and create new versions, create fresh versions that kind of stand the test of time.
01:52It's been more than 20 years since the first Gothic came out,
01:56and it's difficult to think about how you bring something that has such a history
02:02into modern times with the quality of life we have now,
02:05and how you stay truthful to the original experience of playing such a game,
02:13which was quite innovative, quite new to the whole market and what it brought to RPGs.
02:20I got immersed into the world of Gothic thanks to Kai Rosenfranz and his creations,
02:27and I want to say a big thank you to the Snowball localization team,
02:34because they made a huge job with the voices and localization.
02:38It helped me a lot to go deeper in this world.
02:41I think that Gothic 1 was a game that allows the player to go everywhere, anywhere, and anytime.
02:49So that feeling that the player has in order to make his own choices.
02:54There was, I don't know, 15 years, over 10 years, there was nothing happening with it,
02:59which is sad, because it's a franchise and a game that people deeply care about
03:05and are very emotional towards.
03:08And I'm myself sad, actually, that I never got to play another Gothic game in this time.
03:14We are fighting with memories.
03:17We're just trying to embrace the original vision of the authors.
03:20When I was young, I played the games in German.
03:23It was one of the only games which had a real character and authenticity to German culture.
03:33The dialogues were written in a way how you and me would speak
03:38if we would be, I don't know, friendly, drinking a beer and talking about stuff, right?
03:42And that is something that was never done by a game.
03:46It was so natural and so close to reality, in a way, without being a simulation or whatever.
03:55It kind of fascinated me always, right?
03:58Because they were cursing each other in the game and reacting to each other in a very rude way sometimes.
04:06And that was kind of an attractor for me.
04:09I think it has something special.
04:12This game, from the beginning, from the moment you start playing it,
04:16it hooks you, it wraps you in that dark and hard aura, right?
04:24You get that feeling of being part of that world very quickly.
04:31The music, the environments...
04:35So I really liked Gothic because of the setting and the world.
04:39And it caught my attention because it was a game I wasn't used to playing at that time.
04:44A game that doesn't guide you, doesn't tell you where you have to go or what you have to do.
04:49You have to pay attention to what the characters tell you,
04:52you have to buy the map, you have to be very attentive,
04:55and that is really a very immersive experience.
04:58And I think that's what I liked the most about the game.
05:01I think it's a very grounded game, that you feel like it's tough, it's hard,
05:06but also it's very realistic.
05:08What was amazing to me the first time that I played Gothic
05:11was how you could solve a lot of situations taking advantage of everyone.
05:17Everyone would take advantage of you, of course,
05:20but then you have these chances where you can take advantage of a character killing a scavenger for you,
05:26so you can go around something.
05:28I think that what I like the most about Gothic,
05:31that it combines magic and everything,
05:33is that although it's a fantasy game, it's very plausible.
05:38It's not 100% realistic, but we try to make it look realistic.
05:43So it's like combining those two worlds
05:46and it doesn't give you the feeling that you're in a game that couldn't exist in real life,
05:51because it's something that makes you get inside the character
05:55and feel that you can be living that.
06:22and how you learn abilities,
06:24and what also the progression had an impact on your fighting styles,
06:30like the main character had.
06:32Really, I think everybody struggled fighting against the first scavenger
06:36or ran away from the tickers.
06:39And for me, this point,
06:41from then learning that all the decisions make sense and all affect,
06:45and in the end of the game you are stronger and you get a name in the colony,
06:49for me that's the most memorable thing of the game.
06:51For me, the main thing that defines Gothic,
06:54it's the way you interact with other characters.
06:56I mean, it's not about killing 20 wolves
06:59and so you get a rise in your level of expertise in sword fighting.
07:04It's about finding someone,
07:06convince him to teach you how to improve your skills,
07:10and then maybe if you're good enough,
07:13he will teach you something.
07:15These human relations.
07:17Our aim was also to create this remake in a mindful way
07:23and with respecting greatly the original,
07:25but we also wanted to set up with the graphics
07:28to be like a modern game with a realistic look.
07:33And that kind of fights with the original,
07:35because the original, they only had so much polygons per figures, for example.
07:40And with these restrictions,
07:43you design creatures and NPCs and whatever,
07:46you design it in a very specific way to get the fantasy in your head.
07:52You had to do this back in the day.
07:54If there is people who are like,
07:56yeah, but I like this look.
07:58If you really like the look of the original game,
08:01I mean, I think there is a game for you, which is the original.
08:04And thankfully, I mean, you can now play Gothic 1 and 2
08:09as classic editions on modern consoles,
08:13which I think was also one of our key strategies
08:18always to take care about franchises and IPs
08:21to make sure the thing that people love is actually preserved.
08:26In the end, we're fighting to recreate the love memories.
08:29And in Spanish we say, there's a saying that says,
08:32cualquier tiempo pasado fue mejor.
08:34It seems any past time was better, was way better.
08:39So in the end, we are trying to challenge with this,
08:41but it's a nice challenge.
08:43So when I see, when I read some fans comments about,
08:47and they say, for example, a new cam image,
08:49we released not much ago, not much time ago.
08:52And they say, wow, this is exactly how the new cam
08:55was in my mind when I was playing.
08:57And then some other fans show him the real image
09:01of the new cam of the original game.
09:03And they say, what the hell? What was this?
09:07In my head, it was like the remake one.
09:09So first of all, I think that the fan base of the original
09:13is a multi-layered demographic and structure.
09:18I think there's not one voice that you can listen to
09:21and say like, if you do it like that, everybody will like it.
09:24And that's the core problem.
09:26There's so many different opinions.
09:28There's even like, when we did the Gothic playable teasers,
09:31there were even like old fans who were like,
09:35great, finally we're doing something different with it.
09:38I disagree with this.
09:39I feel like with the playable teaser,
09:41the aim was to really push the boundaries
09:44and go over it to get strong reactions.
09:46And we got that. So that worked out.
09:48So back in the day, we were asking, OK, what fans want?
09:51What do they want?
09:52They want, I mean, the same story with new graphics,
09:55or maybe a retold.
09:57Maybe they want a new story within the world,
09:59or maybe they want something in the line of new modern games
10:03where the character is always talking
10:05and doing jokes to the player.
10:07I don't know.
10:08So we thought, OK, let's go stream.
10:10Let's force a very strong reaction.
10:12And with that, we can understand what they really want.
10:15And in the end, we got the reaction.
10:17We got a lot of ideas from the fans.
10:20The fans showed us the way,
10:22and they helped us to create the pillars,
10:24the pilars of the Gothic remake.
10:26I remember four years ago,
10:28creating a document with the pilars of the game view
10:31and saying, OK, those are the, we cannot move.
10:34Those are the pilars of everything
10:36that we are reconstructing in the next years.
10:38Those are the founding pilars, and it should be that.
10:40So for me, the PT was good
10:42because it helped us to define those basic pilars,
10:45and we are here today.
10:46When we started to create the real Gothic 1 remake
10:49and got the green light to do it,
10:51we set out to, or we defined,
10:54that first and foremost,
10:56we have to please the old Gothic fans.
10:59Because if they don't like our game,
11:02then this game has no right to exist.
11:05I would say two things.
11:06The first thing to the fans is that
11:07I hope that they fully understand
11:09the way we embrace the original,
11:11the way we respect and try,
11:14we are trying to honor the original
11:15because we understand how important is this game
11:18or the franchise, but Gothic 1 in special for them.
11:21Sometimes I read fans telling,
11:23OK, I was playing this with my father,
11:25and I will play the remake with my son.
11:28So I hope that they understand
11:31that we are doing this with passion
11:32and with all of our heart.
11:34It's the people out there
11:36that make us do what we love doing.
11:39They enable us to do that,
11:41and they are kind of the other half of that world
11:47that kind of only works
11:48if the both halves come together.
11:50We being passionate game developers
11:52that pour our hearts and souls into making the game,
11:56and the audience that enjoys playing those games
11:59and kind of keeping it alive over so many years.
12:02And for the future,
12:03I would like to play Gothic Remake
12:05in 20 years with Aran, with my son.
12:07He's two years old now,
12:08but maybe in 15 years or 16 years,
12:10we can play together and he says,
12:12OK, Papa, you did this.
12:14But yeah, maybe in 10 years,
12:16we can play together to this.
