00:00What can you tell us about this character of yours, Ash Tyler?
00:05We meet him as a PRW and he's gone through some really horrible things and we meet with
00:09Jason and Rain and it's just about him going back onto the ship, trying to find out who
00:12he is, trying to find some kind of normality again because you're going to see the effects
00:15up to episode 8 but we see everything starts to come to a head soon and see how it's all
00:21affected him, what happened and that kind of thing.
00:22Do you feel connected to this character at all in any ways?
00:25Do you see yourself in the character?
00:26I suppose there's always an essence of you in it, certain emotions, certain ways you
00:31play things but in terms of him being a security officer or a soldier, no, that's not something
00:37I grew up with or anything like that but in terms of he fights a lot, I love Bruce Lee
00:42so that's a connection.
00:45What was the kind of preparation that went in for you to prepare for this role?
00:48You do your basic research first of all and then you try and soak up some stuff by watching
00:52Star Trek stuff, then you try and research some soldier stuff and then when you're on
00:55set, it's about soaking it up and letting it all go and relaxing and concentrating and
00:59focus and playing the scene, just different things like working on the accent.
01:02There's so many different little things you have to do, having music that inspires you
01:05or being on set and that kind of stuff.
01:07Is it a physically challenging role as well?
01:09A few of the episodes were, there was some action-y stuff but as we go on, it's more
01:13and more emotional stuff I reckon but it's both, it's a great mix, it gets you a lot.
01:19Were you always a Star Trek fan growing up?
01:20I wasn't a super fan but my grandad and my uncle were big time fans, they used to record
01:24every episode on video and stuff.
01:26Next Generation is what I grew up with, Patrick Stewart and that was my main influence but
01:31I became a fan now.
01:33What would you say is different about this specific Star Trek series from the other Star
01:38Trek series that have come before?
01:39I think it's got a darkness which is nice.
01:41In any good drama, you need to have some kind of conflicts and you see the characters have
01:45flaws, we're seeing it behind the scenes in the corridors, in the bedrooms and things,
01:49you don't really have that with Star Trek before and that's for me what makes a good
01:52drama.
01:54Star Trek West makes a good Netflix show.
01:55Are you a Klingon on the show as well?
01:57Fan theories, yeah.
01:58I'm just glad people are interested, Star Trek fans do this all the time, they're really
02:01good detectives but I want you to just watch it, it's a mystery, it's good.
02:06Do you have a message for Star Trek fans out there?
02:08Enjoy the show, I love you.
02:24I'm mud.
02:25You chose to do the right thing.
02:30Even at great cost to yourself.
