00:00Good architecture opens up possibilities, makes life richer and deeper.
00:22West coast modernism is a bit more approachable, it's not afraid to have some sand tracked
00:28in from the beach.
00:29A modernist house is about expanding into the environment.
00:30It's a different type of living.
00:31A good piece of architecture is a habitable work of art.
00:32The best of them create the sensation where you feel like my god this is amazing, I want
00:33to live here, I want to stay here, I don't want to leave.
00:34You're so much closer to the reality of what the world's about.
00:35It was significant because it was a totally different architecture.
01:05We hadn't seen buildings like this.
01:08It had some momentum and then it sort of died.
01:12The general public was a little cautious about these new objects that came onto the scene.
01:20I don't know how many times I heard it's a teardown Pratt, you can't save it.
01:32What saved the remains of modern architecture in the west coast was certainly the wallpaper
01:37magazine revival that happened in the 90s.
01:40There was all this talk about the democratization of design and that design was going to change
01:44the world and people got really excited about it.
01:48There are houses out there that are really, really exciting and keep the spirit going.
01:54There's a linking up of generations, there's this symbiotic conversation happening.
02:02I think one of the things about modernism is whatever the materials are and the availabilities
02:07of materials and the techniques of the day are the ones to embrace.
02:12It's not really about keeping it perfect, it's about letting life happen in it.
02:19I think everybody appreciates that sense when you're standing in something that is beautiful
02:26and well thought out.
02:28Your life is better for that moment.
