00:00Ladies and gentlemen, I think you've all heard about the man who actually paid a million
00:22dollars for a movie story.
00:24His name, of course, Samuel Goldman.
00:28And the story he bought was Guys and Dolls.
00:30Now, because I felt that this was the greatest musical I'd ever seen, I actually made four
00:36flying trips to the Pacific coast to film excerpts of the show for my Sunday night TVer
00:43over the CBS network.
00:45And it is my idea of a wonderful picture.
00:48Now, incidentally, that million dollar check that Sam wrote was only a starter.
00:53Before he was through, Guys and Dolls had cost him five and a half million dollars.
00:59And in Runyon's language, that is a lot of lettuce.
01:03Now, what did Sam Goldman get for it?
01:06Well, among other things, he got Damon Runyon's world of fabulous characters.
01:12The jails must be empty tonight.
01:15Can anybody be missing?
01:17Terry the Horse, Liver Lips Louie, Angie the Ox, Society Max, and here is a face for which
01:28I cannot supply a name.
01:31May I ask where you come from?
01:33East Cicero, Illinois.
01:36And what is your occupation there?
01:39I'm a scout, master.
01:44Marlon Brando never danced or sang a note in his life until he met Goldman.
01:49But he sings and he dances in Guys and Dolls and he'll fracture you.
01:55Jean Simmons, too, is a dramatic star, not a singer.
01:59But as Sister Sarah of the Mission Doll, she's adorable and her singing voice is terrific.
02:05Together, these two generate excitement that's electric.
02:08Let me show you what I mean.
02:10Would you be open to a proposition?
02:13I've had those, no.
02:15Don't flatter yourself.
02:16I'm talking business.
02:17I am in a position to supply you with the raw material you need for your work, namely
02:22sinners.
02:23How?
02:24Frank Sinatra has amazed the entertainment world with his dramatic prowess.
02:29Now to prove he's still the top song interpreter, here he is as Nathan Detroit.
02:35Adelaide, Adelaide, ever loving Adelaide, is taking a chance on me.
02:49You're at it again.
02:50You're running the game.
02:51I'm not going to play second fiddle to that.
02:52I'm sick and I'm tired of stalling around.
02:53I'm telling you now that with you, when I think of the time gone by, Adelaide, Adelaide,
02:54the way I try, Adelaide, Adelaide, I could honestly die.
02:55Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide,
02:56Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide,
02:57I can't even handle the pain that you put me through.
03:08Adelaide, Adelaide, I'm running the game, you're at it again.
03:09I'm sick and I'm tired of stalling around.
03:10I'm telling you now that with you, when I think of the time gone by, Adelaide, Adelaide,
03:11the way I try, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide,
03:12Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, I
03:13could honestly die.
03:14Vivian Blaine was a comedy sensation in the original cast.
03:15She's even funnier in the picture.
03:16With four great stars like these, Goldwin needed a writer and a director just as big.
03:19He found both these talents in four-time Academy Award winner Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
03:26The result is sheer greatness.
03:29One short scene will show you what Joe Mankiewicz can do with a few simple words.
03:35Whatever you do, wherever you go.
03:38Why, Sister Sarah, why?
03:40I want to be with you.
03:42The world's full of souls closer to salvation than mine.
03:45Anytime, anywhere.
03:47Easier to save and much more worth saving.
03:53The music of Frank Lesser is always a part of the story.
03:57Michael Kidd's imaginative dance direction
04:00even tops the exciting job he did in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
04:04Now he has the Goldwyn Girls to work with.
04:07Of all the grand entertainment ever produced by Samuel Goldwyn,
04:11an Academy Award winner himself,
04:13this is his best.
04:15With its humor and drama, its songs, its beauty,
04:19no musical ever made can compare to Guys and Dolls.
04:23And with stars like Marlon Brando,
04:26Gene Simmons,
04:28Frank Sinatra,
04:29Vivian Blain,
04:31and a cast of hundreds in cinemascope and color,
04:34the toast to the town predicts
04:36that Guys and Dolls will be the toast to the world.
