00:00One of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, seen by over 73 million
00:09people worldwide, has finally come to Dubai.
00:12The musical Cats enchanted audiences for the first time in the UAE on the 16th of January
00:16at the Dubai Opera in downtown Dubai, and was a huge success.
00:20People were a bit unsure what was going on, and you could really tell people were listening,
00:23which is quite nice, actually.
00:26And then halfway through the show, it changed.
00:28People started to really think about what was going on, and they were loving it, clapping
00:32along and cheering, and at the end, it was amazing.
00:36The atmosphere was really exciting, there was a lot of people here, and we've been working
00:41on it for so long to finally get that important ingredient of getting an audience in front
00:47of us for the first time.
00:48It was fantastic.
00:49It went really well.
00:50While getting into character for the actors has been a lot of hard work, being part of
00:53such an iconic show has made the hours of rehearsal worth every second.
00:57This character is called the Rum Tum Tugger, and it is amazing to play, because it's very
01:02much like me, like I'm always, if you say don't do this, I'll do it twice, and if you
01:07say don't go there, I'll go, and I'll call you to see that I'm there.
01:12It's like, I mean, ask my mom, yeah.
01:14So it's just great, because when everybody's doing something, I'm doing something different.
01:17When everybody's quiet, I scream.
01:19When everybody's screaming, I'm silent.
01:21So it's just a lot of fun, and to make people laugh, it's just wonderful.
01:25You aren't really sure how you're going to feel when you play a character such as this.
01:29You know it's a big bravado character, but you don't know in what way.
01:34And once you put it all on, and you've done all the work, the hard work of learning the
01:37dancing and the singing and where to stand, then this completes the ensemble, you know,
01:42and you can really focus in on what you have to do and what you have to provide.
01:46One of the biggest reasons for the success of the musical has been the interaction between
01:50the actors and the crowd in attendance.
01:52This show particularly is all about, there is no war between us and the audience.
01:57It's a collective environment, you know, we create this world that they have come into,
02:03and so to have them there is really important, and we're directing a lot of our storytelling
02:08to the audience, so they very much feel part of it.
02:11That's why I wanted to do this show, because I heard stories like that, that every night
02:16was different because of the people you interact with, but also to the characters on stage.
02:21We all get to do some choreography, but we get to play within the show.
02:28You do have set positions for the choreographies, but all the interactions, every day you can
02:32interact with a different cat.
02:33You can jump on top of the oven, you can go on the car boot, you can, it's phenomenal.
02:38That's why you can keep doing the show for years and years, it never gets boring, never.
02:42Cats will be running until the 25th of January, with three more shows added from the 26th
02:46to the 28th due to popular demand.
