00:08Hundreds of thousands of people are gathering in the southern Indian city of Chennai to
00:14pay respect to their beloved leader Jayaram Jalalitha, a former film actress and popular
00:19politician. Jalalitha, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu State, died late on Monday after surgery
00:25following a heart attack a day earlier. A sea of weeping mourners surged towards the
00:30steps of a public hall where Jalalitha's body, draped in the Indian flag, was kept
00:35on a raised platform. Thousands of police officers formed chains to stop the heaving
00:41crowd from surging up the steps.
00:43In New Delhi, lawmakers observed a minute's silence today before both houses of parliament
00:49were adjourned for the day in respect for the woman who many refer to as Amma or Mother.
00:56A US Defense Department study that proposed cutting $125 billion in administrative waste
01:03from the Pentagon budget was buried amid concerns the findings would give Congress an excuse
01:09to further slash defense spending, The Washington Post reported.
01:13The report, issued in January 2015, identified a clear path for the Pentagon to save the
01:19money over five years by streamlining the bureaucracy through attrition and early retirements,
01:25curtailing the use of contractors and making better use of information technology, the
01:30Post said.
