00:00So, basically, we're out in the wilderness of Omolkwein at the moment and what Louise
00:17and Barbara are doing, they've got several feeding stations set up for the stray dogs
00:21here and, basically, they bring the meat that they've been given, rice and dry food and
00:27water and they come up here to the feeding stations twice a day. Water twice a day and
00:33food once a day to distribute it for the dogs. And it's not just the dogs, they've got ones
00:37for the donkeys as well and they also have contributions to take to one of the camel
00:41farmers. It's a fantastic, thankless task and these animals rely so much on the hard
00:47work that they're doing.
00:50For the donkeys, because of the times that will come, will either come very early morning
00:54or this time, we'll kind of feed them on demand so they know exactly where even the
01:00dogs' feeding stations are. Many a time we'll record the donkeys pinching the doggies' food.
01:09We're heading off to one of the next feeding stations now so we might see some more donkeys
01:13or some more dogs at the next one, I have no idea. It's all a big surprise.
01:17These are the guys that I leave the food because they have bullet in two German Shepherds.
01:26Oh really?
01:27So we're trying to give them a bag of food every other week or so, you know, just so
01:33we know the doggies are looked after.
01:35How are you?
01:39How are you?
01:41How are you guys?
01:43How are you?
01:45How are you?
01:49Straight in the bucket.
01:51The three dogs here have been adopted by the workers. This is Bullet, that's actually a she,
01:56was a stray and so Barbara and Louise come and drop food off to the guys for them and
02:02we were hiding these two German Shepherds in a shed because they were a bit worried
02:05the dogs were going to be taken away from them but then once the trust has been built
02:09up all the dogs now come out and they all feed together and they're really happy to
02:13see the ladies come up here every now and again to give the dogs some food and some
02:17TLC as well.
02:18You can't have all of that. Oh no, no, I'm not grabbing that off him.
02:22It's like, no chance.
02:26Hello, hello, hello.
02:30Hey guys.
02:35So all these dogs have heard and smelt the food, they'll be now making their way across
02:40to the feeding station to have their evening dinner, sitting there waiting patiently.
02:45And this is the major feeding station, there can be anywhere from 20 to 30 dogs up here,
02:51numerous donkeys and camels as well and so there's something for everybody, there's the
02:57dog food, the roughage and the veggies for the donkeys and the camels and we haven't
03:02seen any yet but they will come up here through the night and Louise and Barbara are just
03:06putting all the food and everything out now for the animals.
03:09So we've come up to another area of the Ummelkwein in Toulouse and we're going to have a look
03:15at the Ummelkwein industrial estate and this gentleman here is looking after some little
03:19tiny puppies, there's a mum and several pups here that he's currently taking care of.
03:23So the ladies bring up some food for him every few days so he can carry on taking care of them.
03:29We'll go and have a look.
03:34These literally, the larger ones here are engorged, so they're literally full of blood
03:41and the smaller ones are feeding, they literally suck the life from the dog.
03:46And if you don't take the ticks off, it will literally kill the puppies in days.
03:51Days, I'll tell you how anemic he is, very.
03:55You see the gum is white and there's very little blanching.
04:00Not long this guy, not have long, he's very anemic.
04:05We'll put a shampoo on him first and that brings a lot of them to the surface
04:10and then we'll manually remove, we'll just get in.
04:13It's the only way where vets agree, it's the only thing that we can do is literally
04:17you just have to pull them off into as little discomfort as what you can to the poor doggie
04:23because they're traumatised from it.
04:25We'll have to try and give them as much chance as what we can of life.
04:30It's not about rehoming them or anything, you're not thinking of adoption at this point
04:36you're thinking about keeping them alive.
04:39This is really a full time job for these ladies.
04:42So what they'll do now with the puppy is they'll de-tick him, take all the ticks off
04:45he'll have a special bath and then he'll have a special antibiotics and treatments
04:50to prevent the ticks coming back as well.
04:52But really this is an ongoing process because the ticks do eventually come back
04:57so it's a constant work in progress with these dogs.
05:00And with a puppy this small, these ticks and the amount of ticks he has on him
05:05would literally kill him within a week because of the amount of blood they're sucking out of him.
05:11If we start now giving him some iron supplementation
05:14then that'll just slowly and slowly help get his iron levels up
05:18hopefully save his life.
05:23Good boy.
05:25And this'll help with the anaemia.
05:27Good.
05:28This'll just help start to replenish his iron levels.
05:32Every single pup that we've rescued from here
05:3414 puppies we've rescued from here
05:37and they've all been exactly the same.
05:39And they just live in the sand and on the bushes and everything
05:42and as the dogs run past they cling on to the toes
05:46and then work their way up.
05:48Yep.
05:49And they'll always go around the ears
05:51because they're just a perfect condition for them all to breed in.
05:54To multiply.
05:56I'm just feeling all itchy now, it's horrible.
05:59You'll dream about them tonight.
06:01It's not.
06:03But it has to be done.
06:07So this is basically what a night out
06:09with the ladies from the Animal Welfare Project at Uml Kwain looks like.
06:13It's a couple of hours of going around all these feeding stations
06:16looking after the dogs, the cats, the donkeys and camels
06:19some of which we've been able to see tonight.
06:22Louise and Barbara are doing absolutely an amazing job
06:25and it's been fantastic to see how they work.
06:27These guys are amazing.
06:29The solution and that all is so important.
