00:00Everyone's trying to get fit in Dubai, but no one wants to spend hours on a treadmill.
00:10For a more fun and exciting way to stay in shape, some residents are turning to kickboxing.
00:15Gulf News went to a local gym to try out this martial art form.
00:18I'm here to do some kickboxing today at the gym. This is my second time. I'm hoping that
00:23this time I'll be a little bit more tougher and stronger and a little better at it this time.
00:30Harder. Use the body. Try not to do this. That's here. You have to square up here.
00:39Demilza Tomafe is an ex-cop from Australia who runs the KO Knockout Gym with her family,
00:44where she trains members in kickboxing and Muay Thai boxing.
00:47I started coaching in my mid-teens, like 16, 17, and competing in my first fight when I was 13.
00:56To the side. Don't step up. Step to the side. That's it. Step to the side. Roll the body. Harder. Harder.
01:05Our motivation is that it's kind of inbred in our family. We've been doing it for a long time,
01:12so this, to us, is normal. It's our family sport, pretty much. Some people go out and play cricket
01:20or kick the ball around, whereas our family have always been in the fight scene.
01:25To the right. Kick. Drop it back to there. That's it. To the right.
01:31The main thing that's good about teaching is people start seeing results and they get really happy,
01:35and you see the change in their mood from their normal self, where they're just coming in because they're really struggling.
01:42To the point where they're doing it themselves.
01:45It's a rough sport for sure, but kickboxing is fun to do and a good way to stay active.
