00:00We may be reaching the third golden age of Filipino film, the first being in the 50s,
00:23during which time the Philippines was first recognized in foreign countries, in other
00:30festivals, specifically the Cannes Film Festival, where Manuel Conde's Genghis Khan was the
00:35very first Filipino film to have been entered in a significant category. It was also during
00:42those years when the Filipino film industry flourished in the sense that many Filipino
00:48films were produced. Movie stars were at their height in terms of recognition, acknowledgement,
00:53even glamour and substance. The Philippine films also hit the foreign market. We are
00:59hoping that in the same manner that in the 70s, another golden era of the film industry
01:06was proclaimed. There will be a repeat. It's been a while since we've had a slew of films
01:13that have not only been recognized in terms of quality and artistic merit, thanks also
01:21to the influx of independent films in digital format that have showcased not only the Philippine
01:29scenario, but also, in the words of director Soksy Tapasyo, out-of-the-box situations.
01:37They have made a niche in the last few years in international film festivals.
02:08We do independent films. They do also commercial films.
02:18And it's very healthy. It's a good thing because right now, everybody can do a film.
02:24Out of the 100, you will have 10 films that will say something good.
02:38Culture transcends boundaries. Culture connects hearts and souls. So now on the occasion of
02:44the 40th anniversary of the United Arab Emirates, we have been a part of their phenomenal growth
02:49over the past 40 years because of their visionary leadership. And we would like to say now that
02:54we are here for the film festival, it's fitting that we also show them the culture that we
02:58have. We're not just world-class workers, but we also have a culture just like them.
03:02Their growth, even their phenomenal growth, is also based on culture. The Filipinos, we
03:06are also like that. We have a culture that's driving us strong, and they should know about
03:10that, first through the film industry. Hopefully next year, with our food, with our fashion,
03:14with everything else that we can be proud of.
