The UAE's young zany scientists are building robots to help protect the environment.
Transcript
00:00These are the UAE's zany scientists of the future.
00:24Don't be fooled by the boyish looks.
00:26Their brains are busy computing complex mathematical problems and they're on a mission to build
00:31a robot that can help solve the pressing environmental issues of our age.
00:35They were representing their schools at the National Robot Olympiad in Abu Dhabi and showing
00:39off their creations.
00:40Hi, I'm Sai Gokul.
00:42So this is our model.
00:43It's called the Poseidon.
00:44It's basically a water model which floats and it works to prevent water pollution in
00:49the world, lakes and ponds and all these.
00:53I mean it has a claw, which its main function of the claw is to pick up objects on the surface
00:57of the water and even below the surface of the water.
01:01And it uses gears to actually move the claw and it uses the motor to lower it.
01:06The global awareness, the global environment is the theme that they're trying to work towards
01:11and they're trying to incorporate robotic design into a global awareness theme.
01:16So how well do they match those two things together is one of the things we're looking
01:20at.
01:22This robot is made, it depends on the sense of sound.
01:28We'll try it.
01:34And this is what it's all about, the silverware.
01:37OK, so some of it's made out of Lego, but the winning team of the advanced category
01:41will jet off to Japan for the World Robot Olympiad.
01:44They'll pit their creations against the best robots from around the world.
01:48So with the judging over, these engineering masterminds will head back to their workshop
01:52and get ready for Japan.
