00:00And in our new season, we will focus on convergence
00:03or the joining of programs and stakeholders
00:06in the continuous development of communities and communities.
00:10And if there is one, we can talk about it here in our program
00:14Mayor Democrito Aljon Diamante,
00:17the father of Tuburan Cebu Coffee Industry
00:20to talk about how coffee changed the lives of farmers and residents of Tuburan.
00:26Good morning, Mayor Aljon.
00:28Yes, Dayan, good morning to all the viewers of our program.
00:32Good morning to everyone.
00:33Let's talk about coffee and how it helped your fellowmen in Tuburan Cebu.
00:39Alright, tell us, how did the coffee industry start in your place?
00:44Actually, for me, heaven fell here.
00:47Because I ran here and there because I wanted to help the poor.
00:51At that time, charcoal was one of the biggest livelihoods of people.
00:58The mountains were noisy, so I really thought that there should be an alternative.
01:04That's why it suddenly came to my mind that coffee can be used as an alternative.
01:08So that's where I started in 2012.
01:10Now, we're already 13 years old.
01:13Okay.
01:13So, God's mercy, it's already a big help to our poor fellowmen,
01:18especially in the mountains.
01:20How big is the coffee industry in your place?
01:23For us, we planted almost 3,000 hectares.
01:26I'm thankful to all the government agencies, especially in NIDA.
01:31Because we established a convergence,
01:33or all the national government agencies were united to help the poor.
01:38Okay, so the government agencies are helping each other.
01:40What are the agencies, Mayor?
01:42NIDA, National Economic Development Authority.
01:45I started in the National Greening Program in DNR.
01:48Instead of ordinary trees that we plant, we plant coffee.
01:52Okay.
01:53So, yes.
01:54Actually, the packaging of this coffee is beautiful.
01:57This is the coffee.
01:58The Tumuran coffee.
01:59Yes, ma'am.
02:00And the packaging is beautiful.
02:01Are there any agencies that helped our farmers?
02:03All the agencies.
02:05This is made by DOST.
02:07All the agencies here, DOST, DTI, DSWD,
02:14all of them, as long as NIA is included.
02:17Because NIA is the agency in Batubig.
02:20Okay, so the government agencies are really helping each other.
02:23How did the lives of farmers in your area change?
02:28Little by little, their lives changed.
02:31They are earning and helping their families.
02:33And not only that, I also introduced a lot of livelihood programs to our town.
02:38Especially the programs of sustainable livelihood programs.
02:42So, not just that, not just coffee, but almost everything.
02:45Because we are really thinking about how we can help the poor, especially in poverty alleviation.
02:51Because we were also the pilot in NIDA when they called it ASAP,
02:56or Accelerated and Sustainable Anti-Poverty Program.
02:59All right.
03:00For those who want to start a business like this,
03:03how much capital do they need?
03:06And how many months is the return of investment that we are talking about
03:09so that they can really earn here in coffee?
03:13For us, we have what we call plant-to-cup.
03:16Because in the whole Region 7,
03:18we are the only one accredited by the Bureau of Plant and Industry to propagate seedlings.
03:23So, we also do cutting.
03:25We have mother plants, so we produce 20,000 to 30,000 seedlings in a month.
03:30So, the farmers are taught
03:33from cutting up to planting,
03:37then harvesting, and at the same time,
03:39the process of coffee.
03:41So, our concept is really plant-to-cup.
03:45So, we are helping because we have technicians.
03:48If someone wants to plant,
03:50we are willing to help and teach our experience.
03:55Because this is two birds in one stone.
03:58Because you helped the poor,
04:00you earn the poor,
04:02and at the same time, you can help the environment.
04:04So, it's easy. In two years, your coffee will bear fruit.
04:08We will also buy from your production.
04:12We have what we call plant-now-pillator.
04:15So, for example, you plant,
04:17we can provide seedlings,
04:19and then, we will also buy from your production.
04:23We are the one who will process.
04:25What are your plans to expand this program?
04:30We are encouraging other local executives
04:35to plant coffee.
04:37Because the mountains that can bear fruit are vast.
04:42So, for us, as I said, two birds in one stone.
04:45You helped the environment,
04:46and at the same time,
04:47you are helping the poor farmers.
04:50Where did this product come from?
04:55There are a lot.
04:56Actually, it's not just that.
04:58We built a mountain resort in the plantation,
05:01in Tuburan 360 View.
05:03You can see it on the page.
05:05We also built coffee shops,
05:07Tuburan Cafe.
05:09Actually, up to now,
05:11we have produced just enough
05:13to meet the requirements
05:15of our coffee shops.
05:17So, there are a lot.
05:18I want to thank all Cebuanos,
05:20especially Filipinos,
05:22who loved our product.
05:24And I hope this will be for experts also, right?
05:28Yes.
05:28That we can bring this to other countries.
05:30It's a good way to welcome, right?
05:32Yes, ma'am.
05:33Of course, let's taste the coffee
05:35that came from Tuburan, Cebu.
05:36Actually, it's a drip coffee.
05:38This is the trend now,
05:40you just put it in your mug,
05:42then you pour the hot water.
05:44Okay, Mayor, I will accompany you
05:46in drinking this coffee.
05:48And Mayor, you said that
05:50when you consume this,
05:52you will help farmers, right?
05:54Yes, ma'am.
05:56In every coffee that I consume,
05:58there is a poor farmer
06:00who can help.
06:03It's delicious, Mayor,
06:05even if you didn't add sugar,
06:07right? In fairness.
06:09This is organic.
06:11Alright, to our farmers
06:13in Tuburan, Cebu,
06:15what is your message to them?
06:17To our farmers in our town,
06:19I hope we can do our best
06:21and work hard
06:23to maintain our coffee plantations.
06:25Because it's a waste
06:27if we just feed the animals.
06:29It's a waste.
06:31At the same time,
06:33we can help the environment.
06:35Because of the strong coffee industry,
06:37our fellow countrymen
06:39there
06:41are having a hard time.
06:43Their economy is increasing.
06:45Yes, slowly.
06:47And what we are doing,
06:49I built high schools in the mountains
06:51because we bought
06:53our own land.
06:55Then we went to the Department of Education
06:57because in my history,
06:59I went to school far away
07:01in our town.
07:03And in our town,
07:05we don't forget the peace and order
07:07because it was infiltrated
07:09by the insurgents.
07:11But now, it has changed.
07:13The lives of the people in the mountains
07:15and the lives of the poor
07:17are slowly changing.
07:19If we compare this coffee from Tuburan, Cebu,
07:21how can we differentiate it
07:23from the other coffee
07:25available out there?
07:28We have a tagline
07:30that says,
07:32Handpicked and roasted with love.
07:34So there is love.
07:36You need to have love
07:38in everything you do.
07:40If you have love
07:42in making delicious coffee,
07:44you can do it in Tuburan.
07:46Our farmers
07:48have love in what they do.
07:50Also,
07:52it's organic.
07:54And you know,
07:56if you drink this coffee,
07:58you will remember the farmers
08:00in Tuburan, Cebu
08:02who helped raise their lives.
08:04Just a message to our fellow countrymen.
08:06Yes, to our fellow countrymen,
08:08love the Filipino product,
08:10the product of Tuburan
08:12because it's our own.
08:14And let me tell you,
08:16in every cup of coffee that you consume,
08:18you have a poor farmer who will help you.
08:20Thank you so much
08:22for your time.
08:24Mayor Aldron,
08:26Diamante,
08:28and to our fellow countrymen,
08:30you need to taste this coffee.
08:32I can't fully describe it to you.
08:34You need to taste it
08:36so that you can help
08:38our fellow countrymen.
08:40We are very thankful
08:42for your continued support
08:44and we are inviting you to join
08:46our program on Wednesday
08:48where we will be sharing stories
08:50about the difference for the rights
08:53of the poor.
08:55So please join us
08:57and join me, Mayor Aldron,
08:59in sharing this story
09:01because we are all working
09:03together against poverty.
