The opposition Kuomintang's Youth League said on Sunday that their recall campaign against a Taipei district lawmaker will continue despite a minor setback. It comes as petitions across Taiwan rush to collect enough names to initiate the removal process of dozens of elected officials just weeks before amendments to recall laws are set to increase the signature threshold.

00:00The Kuomintang Youth League says they're going ahead with plans to recall a Taipei lawmaker
00:05despite a setback in their campaign. One of the two leaders of the motions against
00:10Zhongzheng and Wanhua district legislator Wu Peiyi was unable to submit his petition
00:16due to not being registered in the district long enough. But the opposition party youth
00:21group is saying they'll keep pushing for the removal of Democratic Progressive Party lawmakers
00:26who they say are sowing distrust in Taiwanese politics.
00:30But the DPP is accusing the KMT of using the recall laws, which are designed to give
00:36civilians the power to remove corrupt or inept lawmakers from office for political gain instead.
00:56It's all part of Taiwan's ongoing recall war, as campaigns to remove over 30 elected officials
01:14from office continue, including lawmakers, mayors and city councillors from both sides
01:20of the political spectrum. And these petitions are working against the clock,
01:25with amendments to recall procedures that will increase signature thresholds,
01:29likely to be signed into law within weeks. These recall campaigns are seen by some as
01:35attempts by both sides to gain numbers in the legislature. But ultimately,
01:40the power to recall lawmakers lies with the public, who, with enough collective will,
01:46have the power to recall almost any elected official from office.
