00:24A Ukrainian attack on the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don damaged 76 apartments overnight,
00:30the city's mayor said.
00:32And Russia's defence ministry said 18 Ukrainian drones were shot down over the region.
00:38Meanwhile, Ukraine's air force claimed that dozens of Russian drones were also shot down
00:43over several cities by their air defences.
00:48In Kiev, an air raid warning was in effect for more than 11 hours.
00:54Russia has sharply escalated the number of drone attacks launched at Ukraine this year.
01:00And Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed that the armed forces have launched
01:04a new offensive in Russia's Kursk region.
01:09On Sunday, Russia's defence ministry said it had repelled three new Ukrainian counterattacks
01:14there.
01:22German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said the European Union can act in an hour if US President
01:27Donald Trump slaps tariffs on the bloc.
01:30Speaking in the first TV debate before snap elections later in the month, Scholz said
01:35his strategy for dealing with Trump is clear words and friendly conversations.
01:40He pointed to his public statements about respecting borders after Trump said he wouldn't
01:44rule out the use of military force to take control of the Panama Canal and Greenland.
01:50He also stressed the importance of European unity and said he and other countries are
01:54working on proposals to increase NATO's presence in Greenland.
01:58Trump pitched the idea of taking control of Greenland on the campaign trail last year,
02:03saying it was important for America's national security.
02:06He said he could impose financial penalties or even use the military to force Denmark
02:11to cede the island to the United States.
02:14Scholz also described Trump's suggestion that the US could take ownership of Gaza, relocate
02:20its population and redevelop it as a scandal.
02:23Scholz's main challenger, the Christian Democratic Union's Friedrich Merz, also voiced unease
02:28about the proposal, but suggested there's a lot of rhetoric coming from Washington.
02:33Merz said the new US president is predictably unpredictable.
02:36Merz, who was the frontrunner in the 23rd February snap elections, also discussed top
02:42domestic issues with Scholz, such as Germany's struggling economy and migration.
02:50Crowds in the West Bank and Gaza have welcomed home 183 Palestinians released from prisons
02:58by Israel.
02:59They were freed as part of the fifth round of releases to take place under the Gaza ceasefire
03:04deal between Israel and Hamas.
03:07Many Palestinians have a friend or family member who has been jailed by Israel for anything
03:12from terrorist attacks to rock throwing.
03:15Some can be held for years without trial in what's known as administrative detention,
03:19which Israel says is needed to prevent attacks.
03:23Israel views the prisoners as terrorists, while many Palestinians see them as freedom
03:27fighters resisting a decades-long military occupation.
03:31Seven Palestinians have reportedly been transferred to hospitals for immediate treatment, but
03:36no details about their health conditions have been released.
03:40Eighteen of the former prisoners released on Saturday had been sentenced to life and
03:4454 were serving long sentences for their involvement in deadly attacks against Israelis.
03:54Israel says its forces have now withdrawn from a key Gaza corridor, which means thousands
04:00of Gazans can now return home.
04:02The Netzerim corridor, which splits the Gaza Strip down the middle, is located just south
04:08of Gaza City.
04:09The withdrawal from the six-kilometer-long strip of land that was used as a military
04:14zone was part of the ceasefire deal with Hamas.
04:17When the ceasefire began, Israel had allowed Palestinians to cross Netzerim on their journey
04:22home to the north.
04:24At that time, hundreds of thousands streamed across Gaza on foot or in vehicles.
04:28At the moment, both sides appear to have made little progress negotiating the second phase
04:33of the ceasefire.
04:35It's meant to extend the truce and see more Israeli hostages released by Hamas.
04:39On Saturday, three Israeli hostages held by Hamas were exchanged for 183 Palestinian prisoners
04:46held in Israeli prisons.
04:48It was the fifth exchange so far.
