00:00A proposal to officially recognize Taiwan is gaining traction in the U.S. House of Representatives.
00:07At least two dozen Republicans have endorsed the resolution, put forth by Representatives
00:12Tom Tiffany and Scott Perry, for U.S. President Donald Trump to officially abandon the current
00:18U.S. policy toward China and Taiwan.
00:21That policy, called the One China Policy, has been in place since the 1970s, and it
00:26sees the U.S. maintain unofficial relations with Taiwan, while also acknowledging, but
00:31not backing, Beijing's claims over the island.
00:35Taiwan has had consistent support from Congress over the years, but this year, there's renewed
00:39hope for a breakthrough.
00:41We have to maintain the strength of the Congress to support Taiwan, but I think we have to
00:46try to strengthen our relationship with the administration.
00:50Now this is not the first time this resolution has been presented to the House.
00:54It has been put forth by the two Republican representatives every year since 2020.
00:58But they are hoping that under a new administration, and growing threats of a trade war between
01:03the U.S. and China, Taiwan could gain even more support, this time from the president
01:08himself.
