Transcript
00:00But we are very pleased as we welcome you back in ahead of Super Bowl 59 for media row to talk to Louis Riddick of ESPN
00:07It's one of the great analysts covering the sport in the country at this point and I got to say one of the most adamant
00:13loud backers of Jaden Daniels
00:16All season long. Yeah, man. What did the kids say ten toes down or something?
00:21I mean you are in his corner in a big big way and you turned out to be very very right
00:27Yeah, no, you know what that started way back man like one during the regular season just watching him play from afar
00:34you don't know a whole lot about a guy at that point, but you just there's just certain things that attract you to the
00:38way guys play and
00:40then you go down the LSU and you start asking people about Jaden Daniels the person and
00:48It just came back, I mean all the reviews came back glowingly and then I got to talk to him
00:53And you think about the things that he went through
00:55As far as his transition from ASU to LSU
00:59the commitment that he made the commitment that he made not only to get better but become a great teammate become a great leader get
01:04To know all the guys and then when you watch him throw the football in person
01:08Look, man. I mean the ball comes off of his on off of his hand like an absolute bullet and
01:14You just knew he was going to be committed to being as great as he possibly can be
01:18He's a team guy first you saw how all the other guys
01:22Brian Thomas Malik neighbors how all these guys went at his pro day. They were there to serve him
01:27It was all about him. And so I'm going I'm going look he not only does he have it as a captain?
01:32When he throws the ball in the way he can run. Come on, forget it
01:35Forget he's the dude and that's not like I'm not trying to talk bad about Caleb Williams, and I wouldn't do that
01:41But I got a different feeling around
01:43Jayden Daniels I did around Caleb and when and a lot of that had to do with just how the players responded to him
01:50They wanted to be there for him. You know what else I saw that the year before
01:54Okay, when I'm going to Ohio State's pro day and you're looking at CJ Stroud workout
01:58All right
01:58And Marvin Harrison jr. Is out there running routes for him and he's coming out the next year and a lot of scouts are sitting
02:04They're going to look at Marvin Harris
02:07And people are going well, why is he even out here?
02:10Like this is a guy who's gonna maybe could be the number one pick of the draft
02:14What does that say about CJ Stroud that he would want to be there for him, right?
02:18And that's not to take anything away from Bryce young because everybody down in Alabama loved Bryce young
02:23But Marvin just had that factor and that's that's what that's a part of the whole process man
02:28When you're when you're evaluating these quarterbacks, but you can watch all the tape in the world
02:32Don't ever believe that the eye in the sky doesn't lie because it doesn't what it doesn't do is give you the entire picture
02:38You have to go see these guys
02:40And when I saw Jayden, I was just like Bing done. That's it. That was it right there
02:45And now look you got veterans young players all going. I'm gonna get a Washington
02:49I want to play with this guy, you know, you think Miles Garrett right now?
02:53You think I would assume the Washington fans would be like Miles. We'll take you. Oh, they're happy. I'm saying. Yeah, you know what I mean?
03:00So yeah, he's I said that I'm sorry. I don't mean to cut you off
03:05I just want to say this and I said this, you know a little while ago
03:08No, if I said it on TV or somewhere else
03:12James gonna have the same effect on Washington that Patrick is having on Kansas City when it's all said and done. That's what's gonna happen
03:19He's gonna have that same thing. Josh Harris is gonna sit there and go how much money do you want?
03:24Just make sure you leave a little bit so we can pay everyone else. But what do you want?
03:28he's gonna be
03:30that kind of guy and
03:32That's I know in a business where everyone's trying to make a headline statement. I'm not trying to make a headline statement
03:37That's just what I think. Well, we use that in our headline
03:40He's gonna he's gonna have that kind of effect as long as
03:46You know Dan keeps people around him
03:50But Patrick has had the benefit of having Andy Reid the entire time
03:55He's had a very stable offensive system same defensive coordinator same special teams coordinator
03:59Same GM can Washington keep that kind of consistency around Jaden Daniels if you do
04:05Yeah, there they go, but well you just touched on it here Lewis but and left you to go into that
04:09What's the roadmap to get there? Because this has been sensational this year was incredible. It's trance and then all the right words
04:15Yeah, okay. You're number one on the scouting report
04:18Everybody's now geared to try to figure out how to stop you slow you down tougher schedules to come etc
04:23What's the road map for him to get there to be? Well, as long as you got him, we're winning 12 games
04:27Yeah, there's well, there's an individual component and then a team collective component for Jaden
04:32he has to understand what his blind spots were this year what he needs to improve upon and
04:37Understand what are some of the things that he struggled with what are good?
04:40What kind of pressure points are people gonna want to push on next year in order to try and make him more comfortable?
04:45How are they gonna try and slow it down for him? You understand?
04:49I mean you guys know about his training about how he uses virtual reality to kind of stay ahead of the game
04:54How he watches it even faster. So then during game day, it kind of looks slow to him
04:58I mean, that's all next level stuff. Why don't more quarterbacks do?
05:01That's a great question because maybe not everybody's committed to the game and committed to being great like he is
05:06You know Tom Brady has a great quote, right?
05:08You don't always have to be the very best to be someone who's extremely successful
05:13you have to be willing to do what most people aren't which is be consistent and
05:16Jaden has been consistent throughout his career in terms of his preparation and he takes it in that next level with this kind of technology
05:23I don't know why everybody wouldn't want to do that
05:25I don't know why virtual reality wouldn't be something you would want to implement and whatever it is that you're doing
05:30It just gives you a step ahead. So he has he's gonna do that
05:35But then Adam Peters has to make sure just like Brett features done in Kansas City
05:39Build that offensive line. Keep him protected
05:43Don't have him getting hit get some explosive playmakers at the running back position
05:48Keep the passing game continuing to evolve will cliff stay around
05:53Is he someone who Josh Harris just goes? Hey, you know, you know, I would do I'd be a cliff
05:57How much money do you want so I'd so you don't go take a head coaching job
06:01He seems like he has found his sweet spot
06:03That relationship between he and Jaden between Dan Quinn and Jaden seems to be exactly what you're looking for
06:12George with junior
06:13I mean is he gonna be someone who stays in the fold the same way Spagnuolo stayed in the fold down in Kansas City didn't
06:18Go anywhere for whatever reason it is people don't want to hire spags and give a give him another crack at it
06:23You keep all that stuff consistent
06:26Continue to restock the football team
06:28It's gonna be like it used to be when I played against Washington back in the days when they rolled everybody
06:34It didn't matter who Louis Riddick of ESPN before he became one of the top executives with the Eagles
06:40Started in Washington. Yeah, his teeth as a scout. How about that? Did you guys know?
06:45Like at that time
06:46Danny and I joke about this all the time as a show like we could just go on the air for years with Dan Snyder
06:51Be like hey still the owner. They have no chance. We'll be back at 2 o'clock tomorrow
06:55Did you guys know that like almost no matter what you did that the ceiling was so much lower just because the process was never
07:02Clean or good. Well
07:04And maybe you just knew that the look the process in and of itself, you know from
07:11From the bottom level up right as you kind of ran it up the flagpole. So to speak the process wasn't the problem
07:18It's like when it got to the higher up it could all get blown up
07:21You can do all the work you got Blair you got
07:25And then all of a sudden something I keep you coming at the very end be like nope, I'm gonna pay that guy
07:29Nope, I'm gonna pay that guy or you know, and that is something that's I mean, that's very defeating
07:36That can lead to a lot of bad decision now not everything happened that way not everything happened that way
07:41I think probably maybe more so what happened
07:44What was the problem back in those days was the continuous churn of coaches and changing of philosophies where you constantly have
07:52Well, this coach doesn't like this kind of player now
07:54We gotta get these at so it was Marty Schottenheimer and then it was Steve Spurrier and then it was Joe Gibbs and then it
07:59Was Jim Zorn and then it was Mike Shanahan. It's like what the hell like, what is all that? You'll never
08:05in Kansas City, it's been
08:07any rape
08:09Right and any rape in Pittsburgh, it's been Mike Tomlin, you know in in Baltimore it was
08:17Brian Billick and now it's John Harbaugh and although those teams aren't like, you know killing it with the Super Bowls other than Kansas City
08:25Washington would love to have the run that Baltimore's happened. Yeah, I'd love to have the run that Pittsburgh's happened
08:30So that it's those kind of things see that and that that is out of a scouts hands
08:35Like
08:36Ownership could change that and they did
08:38Do you remember the 2001 season in Washington finished a year eight Nate have a ton of cap space three in the last 11?
08:45Yeah, right. Exactly. It's on what I'm saying is
08:48The team was set up for 2002 to kind of make a bit of a splash and free agency had all the draft picks
08:54Sorry cap is in a good spot
08:56And Marty's just fine. I remember the night. I got the call from Marty Schottenheimer going. I'm really sorry Lewis
09:02But I'm being let go I'm sorry I didn't get to work with you more I'm like what I just got here in June
09:08This is we just finished the season. You went 500 with Tony Banks at court. How about that Tony?
09:13We just finished the season. It was like that's a recipe for frickin disaster
09:18Yeah, and that's what you've had speaking of which we should ask you before we let you go about the rest of the division
09:24So there's now I just love saying this there's two teams
09:27It seemed like they have their head on straight Washington's one of them
09:29And you've got the Cowboys who are still going to be relevant because they've got a quarterback in deck and the Giants
09:35So just the thought on those two teams
09:38Thoughts on Brian Schottenheimer as the head coach for the Cowboys. It's hard to wrap my head around and then
09:43The Giants do they go quarterback early? Is that guy gonna be there? Like what are those two teams need to do to play catch-up?
09:50Cowboys Brian Schottenheimer Brian was in Washington with his dad that year in 2001. That's right. Um
09:57Look, I think
10:00What's interesting that there's a there's a lot of coaches who just never get the opportunity to really show you who they really could be
10:06from a leadership perspective
10:08from a head coaching perspective
10:09Because they don't get the same kind of like sponsorship that some of these other guys like but this isn't a knock against my boy
10:16Adam Schefter, but he doesn't have Schefter talking about him. He doesn't have reporters from NFL Network talking about him
10:21He doesn't have a powerful agency pushing him out there all the time jammed him down the throat of every owner
10:26So he doesn't get on the circuit, right?
10:29But that doesn't mean that there aren't guys out there. If you gave him a shot
10:32He couldn't be a very competent to very very good head coach. We'll see what Brian so I'm not gonna
10:37I'm not gonna make any judgment about what about what he is and I really don't care what Jerry says about it because you know
10:43You always know he's coming from a different angle one. That's very self-serving, right?
10:47So you don't really know what to believe there. So I don't know. Um, I do know that this football team
10:54They better be able to run the football better they better be able to play more physical football up front on the defensive side
11:02Because Philly can maul them in that way Washington's gonna get that fixed. They'll be a better running football team
11:08They'll get more offensive linemen. Don't get a don't get a home run back
11:13So they better make sure they address some of their issues
11:15I don't really know what Dallas Jerry such a wild card who the hell knows what it's going to look like in in, New York
11:23Yeah, sit in three not being able to get one of the top two unless you move up
11:29Of the quarterbacks coming out in this draft the one guy who I if I would if I wanted to pick one it would be
11:34Cam Ward that would be the guy who I would want I think his attitude his leadership is exactly what New York needs
11:40There I don't think there's any question
11:41Joe Shane needs to not only hit this pick he needs to hit this pick in a historic way because he made a historic
11:48Historic blunder letting Saquon out of there and having that smug attitude like he did to let him out of there and we all saw
11:55that clip that clip is
11:58legendary
11:59John Mara sitting there telling him like almost as if almost like he didn't own the team almost as if to say that he was
12:05A fan going man. I'd hate to see Saquon go somewhere and be good and like I'd really hate to see that
12:11And Joe just has this look on his face like I'm the GM. I know what I'm doing. That's why you hired me
12:17It's what to happen the way it happened and forsake want to be doing what he's doing right now. The only thing that
12:24Can you imagine if he had broken the damn rushing record against the Giants
12:30There if they were to let him play. Oh, you absolutely right. Oh lucky. You're absolutely right enough, by the way
12:36I'd have played as I would do it. Oh my god
12:41John Mera, would it like it would have been like
12:45Every person in this radio row would have been like that's the lead right there
12:51My gosh, that's just unbelievable
12:54That's unbelievable and for everybody out there who hears this who's you know, Giants fans
12:58They all you're just bitter because they gave the top of Gettleman. I don't give a damn about that. I
13:03Honestly, I don't I have a great life. I'm good
13:06I'm just calling it like I see it that to me is one of those moments in history
13:10When John Mera is talking to his GM almost like he's like below the GM like man
13:16I'd really hate to have him go somewhere
13:20And the GM is kind of like get out of here
13:22I'm the GM like like that like it was it was just it was just one of those moments. I'll never forget
13:28Yeah, I'll never forget that
13:31Hall of Famer mark, how about that? How about that dude and greeting? I mean, it's ready all-timer. Hey, this was fantastic
13:37Absolutely. Thanks. I appreciate the street. Of course
