In a heated exchange in the Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar lost his cool while addressing Congress MP Nasser Hussain over the ongoing US deportation row. Jaishankar passionately defended the government's stance on the deportation of Indian nationals, criticizing Hussain's remarks and making his position clear. Watch as the political drama unfolds and Jaishankar takes a firm stand on the sensitive issue of immigration and deportation.

00:00Question number 32, Dr. Syed Nasir Hussain.
00:27Question number 32.
00:32First supplementary on the table of the house.
00:57Question number 32.
01:22Sir, there was no supplementary asked relevant to the question.
01:45However, the member did not campaign for anybody.
01:50This is not the first time this party takes this position.
01:54So, I urge him to withdraw this.
01:58Second supplementary on the table of the house.
02:23Second supplementary on the table of the house.
02:51Second supplementary on the table of the house.
03:21Sir, the government carefully monitors the number of students in all foreign countries.
03:40We also carefully monitor their welfare.
03:44Wherever there is a situation of any tension or likelihood of violence, we alert students as we have done in Ukraine.
03:53Where there is a requirement for us to take any further steps like running a flight to further rescue or any other situation like that, we are prepared.
04:06We always have contingency plans.
04:11Dr. Fauzia Khan.
04:13Nothing is going on record.
04:15Thank you, sir.
04:17Sir, can the minister please clarify the Indian government's official position on this issue and outline the interventions that we are planning to protect the affected Indian students regarding their safeguards for academic progress, financial investments, future prospects.
04:35What is the government going to plan for this, sir?
04:38And also one more thing I would like to ask the external minister, sir.
04:44That President Trump has made a statement on the Gaza Strip today.
04:50Occupying of the Gaza Strip.
04:52Sir, what does India stand on this?
04:54The entire world has retaliated otherwise.
05:00Sir, the first supplementary.
05:05We take a number of measures.
05:07For example, my own answer has given in detail what we did in the case of Ukraine.
05:13We allowed students to transfer to third countries.
05:18We allowed them in many cases, depending on their concern, to do their classes online.
05:25We allowed them to do their practicals in India in exception of the rules.
05:30So, depending on the situation, we have been very sympathetic, we have been very responsive.
05:36All embassies and all ambassadors have been told to take a special interest in the welfare of students.
05:42Whenever there is a situation, another example in my answer is that of Israel.
05:47There were about 900 students at the time when the Hamas attack happened.
05:53We brought back many of them.
05:55And many of them have since gone back, the numbers have grown.
05:59I want to assure, sir, the honourable member through you,
06:02that the welfare of students is something very close to the government's heart.
06:07Every embassy today is very proactive in that regard.
06:11Regarding the second supplementary, sir, it is not related to the question.
06:15Honourable M Thambidurai, fourth supplementary.
06:19Thank you, Deputy Chairman, sir.
06:22The minister has replied in his reply.
06:26Because you know that most of our Indian students, to get a medical education, they are going abroad.
06:32Because now we are facing that kind of crisis, some people have to leave, they have to rehabilitate.
06:38For that he mentioned, National Medical Commission is no objection
06:43if they are transferring the students for Indian universities also.
06:47If they conduct the exam, based on the examination, what is just examination.
06:54Sir, I am thankful for Honourable Prime Minister.
06:57He has announced 75,000 medical suits are going to be created in India now.
07:02And also, for example, if you take Tamil Nadu,
07:06during our Yadavpadi Palliyanam, 23 medical colleges opened,
07:10with the help of the central government also 11 colleges opened.
07:13Because strength has to be increased when the colleges are coming.
07:16My question is, whether the external minister will persuade the NMC
07:22to increase the intake of the medical colleges,
07:27to have a special program.
07:29Then only, based on the test results, I want to know.
07:32Please be brief.
07:33That is what I want to know.
07:35Sir, the supplementary does not directly pertain to my ministry.
07:42My understanding is that the number of medical colleges in the country
07:47have roughly doubled in the last 10 years.
07:50So, there are many more opportunities for students.
07:53We understand that there are many more aspirants.
07:56But, where my ministry is concerned, those students who do go abroad for education,
08:01it is our duty, it is our obligation to look after their welfare.
08:05And I would like to assure the Honourable Member through you,
08:07that we are very much cognizant and sincere about it.
08:10Manish Santhosh Kumar P.
08:15Almost all parts of the world, either in Germany or in Canada,
08:20do we have any idea of the exact number of students who are studying abroad?
08:24And what about the quality of these universities where the students are studying?
08:30Sir, I would like to inform the Honourable Member through you,
08:36that we have a rough idea of the number of students,
08:40because we encourage them to register.
08:42But all students do not necessarily do that.
08:46They are roughly in excess of about 10 lakhs.
08:50In terms of the quality of universities,
08:54what many embassies do is on their website.
08:58They put up advisories.
09:00If there are universities, there are some countries
09:03where there were cases of fraudulent admission.
09:07We issue cautions in the website,
09:10so that students who are planning to go to any country,
09:12they will naturally go to the website and check up
09:15and they will be suitably warned.
09:17It is a very legitimate concern which the Honourable Member has raised.
09:20Students today need to be aware which are the good universities,
09:24which are not, which are universities which have some negative issue in the past
09:31and our websites try to address that.
