Trump, after tariffs, to speak with Canada, Mexico, calls EU trade actions 'an atrocity'
President Donald Trump said on Sunday, February 2, the sweeping tariffs that he has imposed on Mexico, Canada and China may cause "short term" pain for Americans as global markets reflected concerns the levies could undermine growth and reignite inflation.
Trump said he would talk on Monday, February 3, with the leaders of Canada and Mexico, which have announced retaliatory tariffs of their own, but downplayed expectations that they would change his mind.
"I don't expect anything dramatic," Trump told reporters as he returned to Washington from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. "They owe us a lot of money, and I'm sure they're going to pay."

00:00Well, it could happen.
00:01If they do anything, we will.
00:03Canada has been very abusive of the United States for many years.
00:08They don't allow our banks.
00:09Did you know that?
00:10Canada does not allow banks to go in.
00:12If you think about it, that's pretty amazing.
00:14If we have a U.S. bank, they don't allow them to go in.
00:18Canada has been very tough on oil, on energy.
00:21They don't allow our farm products in, essentially.
00:25They don't allow a lot of things in, and we allow everything to come in.
00:28It's been a one-way street.
00:30We subsidize Canada by the tune of about $200 billion a year.
00:36And for what?
00:37What do we get out of it?
00:38We don't get anything out of it.
00:39I love the people of Canada.
00:40I disagree with the leadership of Canada, and something is going to happen there.
00:47But if they want to play the game, I don't mind.
00:49We can play the game all they want.
00:51Mexico, we've had very good talks with them, and this is retaliatory.
00:58This is retaliatory to a certain extent.
01:00Millions of people float into our country through Mexico and Canada, and we're not going
01:05to allow that.
01:06But we're going to see what happens.
01:07It'll happen.
01:08But we're going to — might.
01:09We'll see how things work out.
01:10It might happen with them, but it will definitely happen with the European Union, I can tell
01:18you that, because they've really taken advantage of us.
01:21And, you know, we have over a $300 billion deficit.
01:26They don't take our cars.
01:27They don't take our farm products.
01:29They take almost nothing.
01:31And we take everything from them — millions of cars, tremendous amounts of food and farm
01:36products.
01:37So the UK is way out of line, and we'll see the — UK, but European Union is really out
01:44of line.
01:45UK is out of line, but I'm sure that one — I think that one can be worked out.
01:50But the European Union is — it's an atrocity, what they've done.
01:56Well, Prime Minister Storm has been very nice.
01:58We've had a couple of meetings.
02:00We've had numerous phone calls.
02:01We're getting along very well, and we'll see whether or not we can balance out our budget.
02:06With the European Union, it's a $350 billion deficit.
02:13So obviously, something's going to take place there.
02:16I wouldn't say there's a timeline, but it's going to be pretty soon.
02:19No.
02:20No, I'm not going to say.
02:22We may have, short-term, some — a little pain, and people understand that.
02:27But long-term, the United States has been ripped off by virtually every country in the
02:32world.
02:33We have deficits with almost every country.
02:35Not every country, but almost.
02:37And we're going to change it.
02:38It's been unfair.
02:39That's why we owe $36 trillion.
02:42We have deficits with everybody.
02:44We help everybody.
02:45We've been helping everybody for years.
02:48And to be honest, I don't think they appreciate it.
02:50So we're going to change that.
02:52We're going to change it fast.
02:53We're going to make America great again.
02:54I'm speaking with Prime Minister Trudeau tomorrow morning, and I'm also speaking with Mexico
03:00tomorrow morning.
03:01And I don't expect anything very dramatic.
03:05We put tariffs on.
03:08They owe us a lot of money, and I'm sure they're going to pay.
03:11They have to balance out their trade, number one.
03:14They've got to stop people from pouring into our country, and we've stopped it.
03:18They haven't stopped it.
03:19We've stopped it.
03:21They have to stop people from pouring in, and we have to stop fentanyl, and that includes
03:25China.
03:26Fentanyl has killed, this year, at least 200,000 people.
03:32It's pouring in from China through Mexico and Canada, and they've got to stop it.
03:36And if they don't stop it, the tariffs are going to get worse, a lot worse.
