Career-halting nightmares from WWE, AEW and more. These wrestlers NEVER recovered.
Transcript
00:00No matter how good you are at the wrestling, you are at the mercy of those in charge.
00:04I mean, even if you are Stone Cold Steve Austin, if you get told your gimmick is a fish who
00:08has transformed into a human and is now searching for their salmon family, well it ain't gonna
00:13go well.
00:14Some individuals can recover from this, but the majority get totally murked.
00:19So prepare yourself, my friends, as there's 10 moments wrestlers never recover from.
00:2410.
00:25Lance Storm is Boring
00:26Now this one annoys me, because it's not true at all.
00:29If you do listen to Lance Storm these days, that guy is so smart, holding wrestling accountable
00:34in a way few others do.
00:35You don't have to agree with his take, but it's always a fascinating insight and will
00:39give you an interesting angle on many current stories.
00:42Maybe this is why in 2003 Vince McMahon thought it would be a great idea to sort of bury this
00:46dude.
00:47It's total speculation on my end, but I guess Storm may have come up with some logical plot
00:51holes and management didn't like it.
00:53So halfway through his match with Garrison Cade, the General Manager Steve Austin walked
00:57out with a pillow and pretended to fall asleep.
01:00Yep, this was boring, apparently.
01:02I can only assume the plan was for fans to think the same, but this wasn't accurate.
01:07Storm was excellent bell to bell and somebody we can all learn from.
01:10You don't start a successful wrestling school because you suck.
01:13It also felt like WWE wanted you to change the channel when he was on TV, which is not
01:17the idea.
01:18And surprise, surprise, this didn't help him at all.
01:21Lance retired in 2004, so never really got a chance to put this right.
01:25He deserved that opportunity.
01:289.
01:29Rick Bogner is Razor Ramon
01:31I mean, nobody could have survived this.
01:33You turn up to work and get told you have to pretend to be somebody else.
01:37You're done for.
01:38This was Vince McMahon's attempt to flip off Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, who had gone
01:41to WCW because he did indeed own the copyright on their characters, so screw those guys.
01:46He was sure that anybody could do it.
01:48We also had a heel Jim Ross introduce them, which is even more confusing, and at the same
01:52time we trolled the audience.
01:53He actually pretended that the original Razor and Diesel were coming back.
01:58My word.
01:59This was such a disaster, even Vince realised he made an error and cut it short, with Bogner's
02:03last WWE appearance coming at the 1997 Royal Rumble.
02:07He wasn't in it for very long and was out the company overall soon after.
02:11Never really got a chance on a major stage to show what he could actually do as himself?
02:15Ridiculous.
02:168.
02:17Anthony Ogogo's weigh-in
02:18Now, I don't think this one was as bad as we made out.
02:20It didn't go to plan and in hindsight could have been done better, but it was mostly ill-advised
02:25as opposed to terrible.
02:26It felt like some people went way over the top.
02:28To be fair, however, Ogogo himself in an interview did call it flubbing dog shib, so maybe I'm
02:33being too nice.
02:34And he was right in the sense the 2021 segment lacked action.
02:37We focused more on the weigh-in, when really, Anthony should have gone screw that and smacked
02:42Cody Rhodes right in the face.
02:43When Paul Wight started to struggle with the scales, though, this just went on and on.
02:47Why we didn't just make up a number, I don't know.
02:50It's wrestling.
02:51You can say whatever you want.
02:52We likely should have had Ogogo win at the Double or Nothing match too, but sadly soon
02:56after, the former boxer wasn't featured as much.
02:59And that's silly.
03:00Cause I have seen this dude up close and personal, so let's hope 2024 is the year for him.
03:05All he needs is another opportunity and I tell you, man will fly.
03:107.
03:11Keith Bearcat Lee
03:12I still don't get this and it was years ago.
03:14It was like we hired Keith Lee to not be Keith Lee.
03:17It was like getting mad at me when I turned up bald.
03:20What were you expecting?
03:21It began on the 27th of September 2021 Raw, though, when Keith had a match with Tozawa
03:26and squashed him as the Bearcat.
03:29Everybody double took when he was announced that way.
03:31What was happening?
03:32He was allowed to keep wrecking fools for a while, but once again, it was clear he'd
03:35been told to tone it down.
03:37Not one person told us why.
03:39This was a gimmick now.
03:40There was no reasoning at all.
03:42WWE soon realized the error of their ways and slowed things right down.
03:46Rather than make it right, they let Keith go in November.
03:49It was just stupid.
03:51Very sadly, soon afterwards, Lee suffered some serious health issues, so hopefully today
03:55he is doing better.
03:56That's all that really matters.
03:58Wrestling will always be secondary to somebody's well-being.
04:00With that said, we should not have done any of this.
04:046.
04:05Rikishi Did It For The Rock
04:06Excuse me, Da Rock.
04:08This was all-time nonsense.
04:10It's a shame as the Who Ran Over Steve Austin storyline was actually quite intriguing and
04:14picking Rikishi wasn't the worst idea.
04:16The man was super over and you know what they say, if you turn heel when you have all the
04:20momentum as a good guy, sometimes it works perfectly.
04:24This was not one of those times.
04:26It was just a lack of justification because Big Keshe kept telling us he did it for Da
04:29Rock.
04:30But why did he do it for Da Rock?
04:32This was in 2000 and I still don't know.
04:34If you do actually watch the Raws from this period too, for a small time, WWE hinted this
04:38could be racially motivated, before realizing that was a very bad idea.
04:43Then they threw it out the window and put the blame on Triple H instead.
04:47Come on.
04:48It left Rikishi in the worst position because we took the focus off the man and he was just
04:51hanging out in limbo.
04:52He was sort of a heel but also not.
04:55Panicking the powers that be then tried to make him the fun-loving dancing dude again
04:58but they ruined that too.
05:00This was so poorly thought out.
05:02It never got back to where it was and really we should have just sat down and figured this
05:05out.
05:06We didn't.
05:07You know the rest.
05:085.
05:09The Shock Master Stumbles
05:11So, you will be hard pushed to find a character that died as quickly as this.
05:15By my takings, it was less than 5 seconds.
05:18Incredible.
05:19It has become part of wrestling folklore now though, cuz yep.
05:22When Fred Ockman tried to smash through a wall in his new gimmick, he tripped over some
05:25flooring he didn't see and looked so ridiculous the British Bulldog couldn't stop laughing.
05:30Even if we had gotten away with this, the Shock Master was still just gonna be a big
05:33dude wearing a sparkly Stormtrooper helmet.
05:36And what was that?
05:37Surely they were gonna get sued by Star Wars.
05:40There was no coming back from this, although WCW did try and rebook him as a bumbling fool,
05:44but that was never gonna work.
05:45You can't reclaim the joke.
05:47It meant we just ended it in a matter of weeks, although fair play to the former Typhoon.
05:52He still travels the convention circuit today making money off this.
05:55And has a nice ending to the tale.
05:574.
05:58Medusa Bins The WWF Women's Title
06:00In terms of shocking TV, this is right up there.
06:03If you were flicking between Raw and Nitro back in the day and saw Medusa on WCW TV drop
06:08a WWF title in the bin, well, you lost it.
06:11It felt like a war.
06:12Medusa herself has talked about how this derailed her career, because once World Champs Wrestling
06:17was gone, she had no home.
06:18McMahon was so offended by this he never invited her back.
06:21It's not like WCW used her all that well either, and thankfully she did get a Hall
06:25of Fame nod in 2015.
06:28What did Alondra Blaze have to talk about then, though?
06:30This incident?
06:31It just took over.
06:32I suppose you could argue that it was so momentous that it will stand the test of time.
06:37Well, not all that sure it was a great idea, mind.
06:393.
06:40Dr. Death Loses It All In The Brawl For All
06:42It does feel like somebody new learns about this every day, so yes, the Brawl For All
06:46was a stupid idea, because it was shoot fighting in a predetermined world, which just told
06:51you everything else on the card was worked.
06:53It was so short-sighted.
06:54The whole plan, though, was to turn Dr. Death Steve Williams into a real killer so he could
06:59feud with one Steve Austin.
07:00And that's fine on paper, but again, this was two people legit trying to hurt each other.
07:05You never know what could happen.
07:07So when Williams hurt his hamstring mid-scrap, one Bart Gunn and his boxing background exploited
07:12this and knocked Steve out bad.
07:13I mean, it was kind of a mauling.
07:15It took any program with Stone Cold off the table, because he had been beaten so badly,
07:19Dr. Death couldn't portray himself as the tough guy he'd made a career out of.
07:23What were we thinking?
07:24It didn't help Bart either, who got tonked at WrestleMania by pro boxer Butterbean, to
07:29in the future.
07:30If you want to brook a brawler, just let them win matches.
07:33They do have that power, for goodness sake.
07:352.
07:36Bret Hart Leaves The WWF
07:37The more you read into it, it really does feel like Bret Hart didn't have a choice.
07:41Vince McMahon had told him he wasn't going to live up to the terms of his contract, and
07:45that he should take the WCW offer that was on the table.
07:48Not going to do much for your confidence, is it?
07:50It also followed their Montreal Screw job, which was a horrible situation, but even then,
07:55it was the hottest thing in wrestling, and WCW could have capitalised on this if they
07:59wanted to.
08:00They did not.
08:01Instead, the Hitman arrived as a referee in the Hulk Hogan Sting World title match, and
08:06from there, we had no idea what to do with Bret.
08:09I'm sure backstage politics played a role, but this was so dumb, everyone wanted to see
08:14what Hart was going to do.
08:15Very sadly, Bret then got injured as his career came to an end, and that was not fitting of
08:20such a legend, and yeah, it kind of sucked.
08:22Didn't take away from what he achieved, however, the man just deserved better.
08:271.
08:28Vader irks Shawn Michael
08:29If you've ever wondered why there's a lot of stories about Shawn Michaels version 1,
08:33here you go.
08:34At Summerslam 1996, the WWF decided Vader would be a great opponent for HBK, because
08:39Vader was a killer.
08:41Every promotion he'd ever worked in, he wrecked fools, so fans believed the hype.
08:45A large reason for this is because the real-life Leon White would work quite snug, however,
08:50and do you know who didn't like that?
08:52Shawn Michaels.
08:53If you go and watch this now, you can see the Heartbreak Kid audibly chastising him,
08:57and after the match was done, apparently, Michael stormed backstage and said as far
09:01as he was concerned, Vader was done.
09:04He was right.
09:05Somehow, he got in the ear of management, and within two years, Vader had been reduced
09:08to walking out on television and telling the audience he was nothing but a fat piece of
09:13shit.
09:14Yep, that's what we had him say.
09:15Once he left, everybody agreed this was the worst version of the character, when thankfully,
09:19he was able to revive his career by going back to what he had been doing beforehand,
09:23ruining folk.
09:24When it does come to the WWF, however, yeah, that was done, and we never really got the
09:29Vader that we wanted.
