The football shirt worn by Pele when he scored his landmark 1,000th career goal is set to sell at auction for £400,000.

The Santos jersey was worn by the Brazilian legend when he reached his historic milestone on November 14, 1969.

The iconic striker, considered by many as the world's best player, scored from the penalty spot in a 3-0 away win over Botafogo da Paraíba.

At the time the goal was believed to be his 999th - until a sports researcher uncovered a forgotten goal which changed his career tally.

Pele had scored during his time with the Brazilian Armed Forces team in the South American Military Championship against Paraguay on November 18, 1959.

00:00An epic, an iconic shirt worn by probably the world's most famed player.
00:08Steve, tell me about this shirt.
00:10Pelé coming to play in my city was a rare occasion
00:14and the media was building up for this possibility of Pelé scoring the 1000th goal.
00:19If Pelé had scored 999 goals prior to this game,
00:24we obviously expected Pelé to score the 1000th goal,
00:28which he proceeded to do.
00:31He tried not to score this goal because the next game would be Maracana,
00:36where he would be acclaimed as a player and it would be internationally recognised.
00:44But there was a penalty and everybody wanted Pelé to score it.
00:49Pelé actually tried not to score it.
00:52Why?
00:53I think there was probably the directors of the club who wanted him to save this goal for Maracana,
01:00but the crowd did not let him not take the penalty.
01:05And Carlos Alberto, who was a contemporary of his at the time, told him,
01:10Pelé, you'd better take this because if you don't, we're going to be in trouble after this match.
01:15So he proceeded to take the penalty and score the goal.
01:18And obviously, you as a 10-year-old boy, to now, you feel, Steve,
01:27it's time to let this shirt, I suppose, make its mark on the international football scene of collecting.
01:36It's a shirt which, like no other,
01:38achieved a thousand goals of the player who it was worn within.
01:43And what's nice, Steve, it appears to be in very much that original condition
01:48to the day it was worn.
