00:00Some Filipino nurses are thinking of applying to the U.S. because of the U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration policies.
00:07While in an association there, Filipino nurses are still in demand in the U.S. because they are well-known.
00:15First news, J.P. Soriano.
00:21Frances and Bianca just graduated from a nursing course in a university in Manila.
00:27Even though they want to work in the Philippines as nurses, the salary is low and not enough.
00:35That's why in the U.S. they are being targeted to work, especially if they have relatives there.
00:41They can't help but worry that they will be accompanied by those who want to go to the U.S.
00:48because of the Trump administration's restriction on illegal immigrants.
00:52I think it will be harder for us to work or apply there since I feel like they will be more strict in a way with their workers from other countries.
01:06But first, the U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Mary Kay Carlson, said that Americans have high regard and respect for Filipinos,
01:15especially for the Filipino nurses who helped and sacrificed in hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
01:22Filipino healthcare workers in the U.S. are diligent, hard-working, and kind.
01:28And the Trump administration recognizes this.
01:32It's not about being arrogant, but Filipinos are very great nurses.
01:39I think one of the major nurse exporters of nurses to go abroad is from the Philippines.
01:47Despite the worry, I think they still need us, possibly.
01:54Of the 5 million nurses in the U.S., there are 200,000 Filipino nurses or 4% of the nursing population in America.
02:05According to the Philippine Nurses Association of America or PNAA,
02:10the need for hospitals in the U.S. is high for Filipino nurses.
02:15That's why the government of the Philippines can make use of the need of the U.S.
02:21when it comes to Trump's restriction on the issue of immigration.
02:25Given the rising needs of healthcare professionals, especially nurses in the U.S.,
02:30I think that's going to be a leverage, especially us Filipinos.
02:35They know that the caliber of nurses from the Philippines is very high.
02:42This is the first news. J.P. Soriano for GMA Integrated News.
