00:00How long have you been competing in the Mixed Masters Regatta, and what inspired you to join in the festivities?
00:09The first time I went in was 1989. It's held down the road from where I live, I'm in Marvin.
00:16Hillary's Maroon is a great facility that was built around about 83, 84.
00:21Channel 7 ran it in the early days to raise funds for Telethon.
00:27And I've always been an ocean guy, and I saw it on the news one night, I think it was about 87.
00:33And I thought, ah, that'd be fun to do with my two daughters at the time.
00:37So the first time I went in it was 89, one daughter was 8, the other daughter was 5.
00:44And it was just a fantastic event, big crowds, they love it.
00:48Some of the creations over the years have been fantastic.
00:51I always remember the first time I went in it with my daughter, who went on to become, I guess I should say, a creative accountant.
00:58I think she learnt that the first time we were halfway down the course the first year.
01:02Prize money, $400. My two daughters halfway down, we were in the lead, they were that excited, they'd started to spend the money.
01:09In those days, Sylvanian family dolls or Cabbage Patch Kids, they had it spent.
01:16They worked out, my daughter at 8, worked out exactly how much she was going to earn.
01:20Dad, Dad, we get $133 each.
01:23Yeah, okay, okay, what about your mum?
01:26Oh, we get $133 and you get $62.50.
01:30The one that's downstairs is our 10th build.
01:34Just getting to be with your family and stuff like that, it's just like, and then seeing,
01:39because you don't actually see what happens until you get it in the water, so it might not float.
01:44It's still that last year, we built a plane and it wasn't wide enough to fit three people.
01:49So we spent most of the time struggling to get on the plane, but it's just good to be part of something like that,
01:57where everyone comes together to see what that may have unfolded.
