00:00Candice Cameron Bure captured hearts as DJ Tanner on Full House.
00:05But in the decades since the classic sitcom's finale aired, the actor has upset the public
00:10time and time again.
00:11These are Bure's biggest controversies.
00:14After Full House ended, Candice Cameron Bure took some time away from her career to start
00:19a family.
00:20When she was ready to come back to the small screen, she dove in head first.
00:24In 2008, she made her Hallmark Channel debut with Moonlight and Mistletoe.
00:29The following year, Make It or Break It premiered on Freeform, then known as ABC Family.
00:35After she made her way back to the spotlight, Bure landed in hot water.
00:39In a 2008 chat with OK Magazine, Bure shared that she had been bonding with her former
00:44Full House co-star, Jodie Sweetin, over motherhood.
00:48She said,
00:49"...I could give tons of advice.
00:50I'm years ahead of her in parenthood."
00:52One thing Bure recommended to Sweetin was the book On Becoming Babywise, which was first
00:57published in the early 90s.
01:00Bure said of the book,
01:01"...it helps your child sleep through the night and helps you put your baby on a schedule.
01:05It's so important."
01:06However, it has since been dubbed by Cafe Mom as the most controversial parenting book
01:12ever.
01:13The advice given in Babywise goes against what many believe to be good parenting, including
01:18punishing your infant for playing with their food.
01:21It doesn't work that way.
01:22The American Academy of Pediatrics even warned against relying on the book, as it recommends
01:28breastfeeding times.
01:30This could lead to dehydration and, quote, "...failure to thrive."
01:34Bure co-hosted The View between 2015 and 2016.
01:38As is traditional on the show, she represented the lone conservative viewpoint among the
01:43hosts.
01:44During her first year on the series, there was an incident involving an Oregon bakery
01:49that refused to sell a wedding cake to a lesbian couple.
01:52After the story made national news, Bure and fellow The View host, Raven-Symoné, got
01:57into a heated debate about the issue.
02:00After the former Disney Channel star pointed out that Oregon law prohibits businesses from
02:04discriminating against customers in this way, Bure offered her own assessment of the situation.
02:10"...I don't think this is discrimination at all.
02:13This is about freedom of association.
02:16It's about constitutional rights."
02:18The actor went on to defend the bakery's decision to refuse service to the couple, going up
02:22against all her co-hosts at the table.
02:25This rubbed many people the wrong way, but Bure stood firm in her beliefs.
02:29She even insisted that her gay friends supported her for standing up for what she believed.
02:34The following month, Bure told HuffPost Live,
02:36"...I was pleased with how I handled myself.
02:39If something conflicts with someone's deeply held religious beliefs, we should have the
02:43freedom to not have to deal with that or to have to be associated with it."
02:48Fans of RuPaul's Drag Race are certainly familiar with this phrase.
02:52"...Not today, Satan.
02:54Not today."
02:55The expression was made popular by Season 6 winner, Bianca Del Rio.
02:59Eventually, it made its way from the drag race world and onto merch worn by at least
03:03one person who, presumably, wasn't aware of its origin.
03:07In 2017, Bure shared an Instagram snap of herself wearing a Not Today Satan tee.
03:13In response, Instagram users were quick to post comments pointing out that the slogan
03:18was Del Rio's catchphrase.
03:20Given Bure's track record when it comes to LGBTQ plus issues, it seemed more than safe
03:25to assume she was not a fan of the reality show.
03:28Del Rio soon took to Instagram herself to call Bure out, writing,
03:32If only this homophobic Republican knew!
03:35Bure then took to the comments section of Del Rio's post to defend herself.
03:39She wrote,
03:40"...I'm not homophobic and always sad when people think otherwise.
03:44Loving Jesus doesn't mean I hate gay people or anyone."
03:47The actor went on to say that she hoped the drag star would promote positivity in the
03:51future instead of tearing down people she disagrees with.
03:55Given her religious and political beliefs, it's no surprise that many of Bure's followers
04:00lean conservative.
04:02But a portion of that fan base quickly turned on her in September 2020, when she shared
04:06an Instagram post of her husband, former NHL star Valerie Bure, with his hand on her breast.
04:13It wasn't long before some of Candice's fans deemed the photo inappropriate and suggested
04:18she act more modestly considering her religious beliefs.
04:21Bure didn't hesitate to respond to the backlash.
04:24In a series of videos on her Instagram stories, she said,
04:28"...for all of the Christians that are questioning my post with my husband's hand on my boob,
04:32my husband of 24 years, thinking it was inappropriate, it makes me laugh because it's my husband.
04:38He can touch me anytime he wants, and I hope he does.
04:41That is what a healthy, good marriage and relationship is all about."
04:45Bure has a strong social media presence, with over 5.7 million followers on Instagram.
04:50The actor uses the platform to display everything from her favorite Bible verses, to her workout
04:56routines, to outfits, to the projects she's filming.
04:59And along with following fellow celebrities like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Victoria Beckham,
05:04she also follows some politicians, which doesn't go over well with some of her fans.
05:09As of late 2024, Bure follows both Republican and Democratic political figures, including
05:15President Joe Biden, Melania Trump, and President-elect Donald Trump.
05:20As Bure revealed in a January 2021 Instagram story, some of her supporters threatened to
05:25unfollow her because of the accounts she was following on the platform.
05:28She said,
05:29"'I follow a very broad range of people, politically, within my work industry, and
05:34then personal friends and things I like.
05:36But a follow does not mean an endorsement.
05:38A follow does not mean I agree with everything they say and do.'"
05:42Bure posted yet another controversial clip on social media in July 2021.
05:48In the video, she lip-synced to the Lana Del Rey song,
05:51while holding her Bible.
05:53She captioned the video,
05:54"...when they don't know the power of the Holy Spirit."
05:57Whether it was the way she mouthed the words or the lyrics themselves, some fans were not
06:03happy with the video.
06:04Curiously, where the actor would usually defend her actions, she took a different tact this
06:09time.
06:10She said on Instagram Live,
06:11"...I usually don't apologize for these things, but a lot of you thought it was weird, and
06:16I'm sorry.
06:17So many of you thought that I was trying to be seductive, which clearly means I'm not
06:21a very good actress because I was trying to be strong, not sexy or seductive."
06:26This wasn't the only contentious lip-syncing performance she posted that year.
06:31In October, she also uploaded a now-deleted clip of her mouthing along to a line from
06:36RuPaul's Drag Race, in an attempt to make fun of the heat she's received for her political
06:41views.
06:42Alongside the caption,
06:43When you're conservative in Hollywood, Beret mouthed along with contestant Scarlet Envy.
06:48"...Is it me?
06:49Am I the drama?
06:50I don't think I'm the drama.
06:51Maybe I am.
06:52Am I the villain?
06:53I don't think I'm the villain."
06:57Comments under the since-deleted video not only called Beret out for using a drag queen's
07:01quote but pointed out that the audio clip on TikTok was called,
07:05"...I am a socialist."
07:06Whatever her intentions were with these posts, the controversial moments will live online
07:12forever.
07:13While she mostly plays it safe when it comes to style, Beret has certainly worn a few outfits
07:18that have caused a stir over the years.
07:20In October 2021, the Hallmark alum shared a pic she'd taken with her husband and two
07:25children to Instagram.
07:27Both Beret and her daughter donned red gowns, while her husband and son wore suits and ties.
07:32On paper, that shouldn't be a big deal.
07:34The issue, though, is that the four were at a wedding.
07:38"...Tell me you're not wearing that to the wedding."
07:41While there's certainly no hard and fast rules to wedding attire, many people believe
07:45that red is a no-go for wedding guests.
07:48At least, some of Beret's Instagram followers certainly thought so.
07:52As one user commented,
07:53"...supposed to avoid red at weddings.
07:55It's a power color.
07:57Steals spotlight from the bride."
07:58The actor responded that there are, quote, "...different style rules in Los Angeles."
08:03alongside a winky face.
08:05She also noted that there were other women at the event in red.
08:08Regardless, the choice drummed up a lot of chatter in her comment section.
08:13Back in July of 2022, Dance Moms alum JoJo Siwa posted a TikTok that featured different
08:19celebrities' pictures alongside captions, like Celebrity Crush and Nicest Celebrity
08:24I've Met.
08:25But when Candace Cameron Beret's face showed up, it was underneath the caption, Rudest
08:30Celebrity I've Met.
08:32The post blew up, and the details of the incident came to light.
08:36Apparently, Siwa, who was still a kid at the time, was at the Fuller House premiere.
08:41She approached Beret and asked for a photo.
08:43Beret declined, and according to Siwa, the star went on to take pictures with other kids.
08:49It didn't take long for Siwa's story to reach Beret.
08:52The sitcom actor called the pop singer, and later shared her side of the story in an Instagram
08:57post.
08:58To her credit, Beret did apologize for this particular faux pas.
09:02I kind of broke your 11-year-old heart.
09:04I didn't take a picture with you, and I was like, oh, I feel crummy.
09:07I feel…
09:08JoJo, I'm so sorry."
09:09Beret once again ruffled feathers when she shared a 2022 TikTok, wishing everyone a happy
09:15Fourth of July.
09:16In the clip, the actor showed off her red, white, and blue accessories, and her God Bless
09:21America t-shirt, as Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA played in the background.
09:26While it might have seemed like an innocent enough post, Matthew Koma, songwriter and
09:31husband to Hilary Duff, called out Beret for her ignorance a couple weeks later.
09:36The vocalist posted his own TikTok video, duetting with the Full House star to address
09:40her song choice.
09:42Koma remarked that the song was actually about the mistreatment of Vietnam veterans upon
09:46their return to the United States, rather than a celebration of Independence Day.
09:51As Springsteen said on a 2021 episode of The Renegades' Born in the USA podcast, Born
09:57in the USA is often misinterpreted and misused.
10:01This is a song about the pain, glory, shame of identity, and of place, so it's a complex
10:07picture of the country.
10:09Our protagonist is someone who has been betrayed by his nation, and yet still feels deeply
10:14connected to the country that he grew up in.
10:16Once upon a time, Beret was a Hallmark Channel staple, starring in over 20 of the network's
10:22movies.
10:23However, her years-long reign came to an abrupt end when she left for the Great American Family
10:28Channel in April of 2022.
10:31Later that year, Beret spoke to The Wall Street Journal about her decision to leave Hallmark
10:36behind.
10:37She explained,
10:38"[It basically is a completely different network than when I started because of the change
10:42of leadership."
10:43Beret followed Bill Abbott, the former Crown Media Family Network CEO who left Hallmark
10:49in 2020, to launch Great American Media.
10:52As Abbott told the publication, he was eager to create a network that aligned with his
10:56own values.
10:57He said,
10:58"[Spiritual or faith-based content is grossly underserved."
11:02When asked if Great American Media might ever follow in Hallmark's footsteps and feature
11:07same-sex couples in lead roles, Beret all but said no.
11:11She replied,
11:12"[I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core.]
11:16Understandably, this didn't sit right with many, leading several stars to speak out against
11:21the actor's remarks.
11:22Among them was Jojo Siwa.
11:24In a since-deleted Instagram post, she wrote,
11:27"'I can't believe' that she would not only create a movie with intention of excluding
11:31LGBTQIA+, but then also talk about it in the press.
11:36This is rude and hurtful to a whole community of people."
11:39Beret's Full House co-star Jodie Sweetin showed Siwa her support in the comments.
11:45On May 24, 2022, 21 people were murdered by a gunman at an elementary school in Uvalde,
11:51Texas.
11:52While the likes of LeBron James and Selena Gomez spoke out about the attack, Beret remained
11:57silent until she was prodded by her followers to say something.
12:01The actor explained on Instagram Live,
12:03"'All of us process things differently, and some of us need more time to process it.'"
12:07Beret went on to explain that she hadn't felt comfortable sharing her feelings on social
12:12media at the time, especially considering how many of her opinions tend to be dissected
12:17by the public.
12:18However, she added,
12:19"'I don't believe silence or lack of posting is a representation of what someone is thinking,
12:24feeling or doing.'"
12:25Beret took the opportunity to also address the mass shooting that had occurred a few
12:29weeks prior at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York.
12:33She said,
12:35If you have been impacted by incidents of mass violence or are experiencing emotional
12:40distress related to incidents of mass violence, you can call or text DISASTER DISTRESS HELPLINE
12:46at 1-800-985-5990 for support.
