00:00You mentioned that the movie is a revenge film. Why did you say that?
00:06Okay, because there was the inheritance issue in our family and so I had to bring it to court.
00:14So you really took your brother to court?
00:17Yes, and I lost.
00:21So that's the twist.
00:23So that's why I had to do the film to say my version.
00:28And are you estranged from your brother?
00:31I'm an actress, so I can be plastican. But yes, we're on speaking terms.
00:40Ms. Rebecca, how does it feel to finally have this commercial after the successful run in Sinag, Manila?
00:49It validates because for 50 years, I was told I am not a good actress, that I'm not good in storytelling.
00:59So that's why I have to produce my own movie.
01:02But it's validating because we've been winning awards also with the help of Sir Mel Navarro abroad and here.
01:11I've got four Best Actress Awards already. In Sinag, Manila, we won eight awards in a single night.
01:18It's validating at the same time humbling for me.
01:22Are those awards add pressure on your part for the commercial release of Her Lakit?
01:29How are you taking that pressure?
01:31I take it as an opportunity given to me by Sinag, Manila and Solar TV because they open the doors, even the windows for me and our group so that we can bring it nationwide and also internationally.
01:45Exciting. Ma'am, we have a sequel. You're planning for a sequel?
01:50Yes, if I get back my return of investment.
01:53Will that also be semi-autobiographical?
01:56It's a sequel. I can't remember the name of this but it's a flashback because Jewel died already here. So it's a flashback of what happened in the past.
02:06Thank you, ma'am.
02:09Did you ask permission or did you inform your brother that you'd be making a movie like this?
02:14So if you notice, we started the film with a disclaimer. That's the advice of my lawyer.
02:20Okay.
02:22But it's also, you can say it's inspired by true events. Not the full story is mine. It's a tapestry, a weaving of stories from the director, from the writer and me as the storyteller.
02:38In the Chinese community, would you say this occurs often that there are disputes regarding...
02:44Yes. I don't like to name names or families but you know there are court cases and you know there are inheritance issues and you know there are mediators.
02:56Until now.
02:57It's very, very much present until now.
03:00And abroad, what's the feedback of other cultures regarding...
03:05At first, we didn't know how to categorize our film. So we just wrote family drama and then we brought it to UK, Asian. We were competing with the Koreans.
03:17Of course, we lost. We cannot really compete with the Koreans but they said we have to make it Asian films.
03:25And then I brought it to Morocco. They said it's about women empowerment.
03:30So right now, I go around the world to talk about women empowerment. That's close to my heart.
03:36But I still want to bring in the biblical values which you saw the verse there. Mercy, compassion and forgiveness.
03:44Is there anything about the Chinese culture that you'd want to impart to people regarding this film?
03:52I was afraid a while ago they might question me like I'm so vocal about gender equality.
03:58Because see, in the Chinese culture, they always favor the son because they carry the family name.
04:04So it's always for the boys, for the girls.
04:07Girls, once you're married, you belong to another family already.
04:13But in my father's will, he wrote gender equality.
04:18And that was what I fought for in court.
04:21Do you think it's changing now?
04:23No, it's not. It's not. I don't want to drop names but you can see.
04:29Thank you so much.
