00:00We recognize that the Holocaust shook the foundation of modern civilization.
00:11This unprecedented culture and horror will always hold universal meaning.
00:19We believe the Holocaust must have a permanent place in our nation's collective memory.
00:26We honor the survivors still with us.
00:31And we affirm our shared goal of mutual understanding and justice.
00:39We must make sure the future generations understand the cause of the Holocaust and reflect upon the consequences.
00:48We must remember the victims of Nazi persecution and all the genocides.
00:57We value the sacrifice of those who have risked their lives to protect and rescue the victims.
01:06As a touchstone of the human capacity for good in the face of evil.
01:15We recognize that humanity is still scarred by the belief that race, religion, disability, and sexuality makes more people's life worth less than others.
01:29Genocide, anti-Semitism, racism, and xenophobia discrimination still continue.
01:41We have prepared the community to fight for peace.
01:47A place to strengthen our efforts, education, and research about the Holocaust and other genocides.
01:58We will do our utmost to make sure that the lessons of such events are being learned.
02:08We will continue to encourage Holocaust remembrance by holding an annual Holocaust Memorial Day.
02:18We condemn the evil of prejudice, discrimination, and racism.
02:26We value the victims as much as the survivors.
02:32The theme for the Holocaust Memorial Day is for a better future.
02:38As human beings, regardless of our abilities, talents, resources, ethnicity, religion, or orientation, there is one thing that we cannot do.
02:52We cannot travel back in time and change the past.
02:57However, we all possess the ability and the power to influence the future.
03:04We gather here today deeply aware of the devastating impact of war.
03:11The Holocaust, the atrocities committed against Jewish people, serve as a horrifying reminder of humanity's capacity for evil and the enduring scars those act leave on the human conscience.
03:26The very term Holocaust, or Shoah, is a stark reminder that even in a seemingly civilized, educated, rational society, systems of prejudice and hatred can be established to exterminate entire groups of people.
03:44Sadly, history has repeated itself in Srebrenica, Rwanda, and continues to unfold in other parts of our world.
03:55The Holocaust, 80 years ago, exposed humanity at its darkest hour.
04:02This led to the establishing of the Holocaust Memorial Day, a day dedicated to collective action to prevent similar atrocities from taking root in our communities.
04:14Whilst we cannot undo the past, we understand that our actions today will shape the future.
04:22That is why this day compels us to remember and not forget, highlight, call out, and speak up where we see hatred manifesting itself.
04:33We need to protect our communities from seeds of prejudice, even gaining a foothold.
04:40This serves as a personal challenge to each of us.
04:44No matter where we are, we must speak out against any individual or forces that seek to sow division and hatred.
04:53We must never remain silent when another group of people are demonized, scapegoated, or vilified for their identities or belief.
05:05By working together, I believe we can create a better future for all.
05:12Shalom.
05:42Shalom.
06:12Shalom.
