Canberrans have gathered in strong numbers to mark Australia Day 2025. In one of the flagship events, two dozen Australians become citizens at the national ceremony on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin. The receipt of their certificates just the beginning of a new chapter in their Australian story.

00:05Welcome by the first Australians,
00:10the newest Australians took their official places in the national family,
00:15coming from every continent to a new island home.
00:20All of you, as Australian citizens,
00:22will weave your chapter into our nation's great story

00:28The promise of a great education brought Chidi Aloise Chidi
00:33to Australia from Nigeria seven years ago,
00:36but the opportunities for his family have exceeded his expectations.
00:41Their welcoming nature, you know, that has actually impacted our lives.
00:46And at this point, we're just looking at opportunity
00:49wherein we could be able to give back to the society.
00:52For the Viswanathan family from India,
00:55it's the more balanced attitude to life in Australia
00:58they've taken to the most.
01:00When you're working, you just work,
01:02and once you finish, you just focus on your family,
01:04and it's not like you're thinking about work all the time
01:07and have to give your time to that.
01:13A special Australia Day too
01:15for the first Canberran to serve as Governor-General.
01:18The daughter of a retired colonel
01:21inspected the Australian Federation Guard.
01:24Once the national ceremony was over,
01:27locals came out to enjoy the sunshine
01:30and some traditional cuisine,
01:33reflecting on what it means to be Australian and Canberran.
01:38We love being outdoors, so anything that gets us out
01:41is something that we will do together.
01:43So tonight we'll come down to the lake
01:45and we're going to watch the light show
01:47and we're just actually just checking out
01:49which markets we're going to come to tonight.
01:51A day for everyone in a country like no other.
