Pete Hegseth has officially been confirmed as the next U.S. Secretary of Defense after a tense 50-50 vote in the Senate, with Vice President JD Vance stepping in to break the tie. The confirmation marks a significant victory for President Donald Trump, despite strong opposition from both Democrats and some Republicans. Hegseth, a former Fox News personality and decorated veteran, faced intense scrutiny during the confirmation process, with critics questioning his qualifications, past remarks on women in combat, and divisive views. His leadership will now guide the U.S. military through a crucial period of defense reforms and geopolitical tensions.

00:00Mr. Vice President, thank you for, uh, breaking the tie.
00:07It's not the last time, or not the first time the headline reads,
00:11Junior Enlisted Marine Bails Out Junior Army Officer.
00:17Restore the warrior ethos in everything that we do.
00:20Rebuild our military and reestablish deterrence.
00:24We don't want to fight wars.
00:26We want to deter them, as you said, and we want to end them responsibly.
00:29But if we need to fight them, we're going to bring overwhelming and decisive force
00:33to close with and destroy the enemy and bring our boys home.
00:37Are there any senators in the chamber who wish to vote or change a vote?
00:44If not, on this vote, the yeas are 50 and the nays are 50.
00:49The Senate being equally divided, the Vice President votes in the affirmative,
00:54and the nomination is confirmed.
00:59All praise and glory to God.
01:03His will be done, and we're grateful to be here.
01:07And as I said in my hearing, it was Jesus and Jenny.
01:11I would not be here without you, sweetheart.
01:14Thank you so much.
01:17I want to thank the President of the United States, our Commander-in-Chief, Donald Trump.
01:21We could not have a better Commander-in-Chief than him.
01:24It is the honor of a lifetime, sir, to serve under you.
01:28We look forward to having the backs of our troops and having your back
01:32in executing peace through strength, in putting America first, and in rebuilding our military.
01:39Mr. Vice President, thank you for breaking the tie.
01:46It's not the first time the headline reads,
01:50Junior Enlisted Marine Bails Out Junior Army Officer.
01:56Some people were saying, 50-50, that's too tight.
02:00Senator Mark Wayne Mullen was nice enough to take my kids up to the gallery
02:04to watch the actual moment that the Vice President sealed the deal.
02:11And they came running in, they said, Dad, instead of being sad about 50-50, 51-50,
02:16they said, Dad, you won in overtime.
02:20That's the perspective I like.
02:22So thank you throughout this process, Mr. Vice President, for being incredible.
02:27I also want to thank the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee,
02:30so many members of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
02:32We became fast friends in this process.
02:35The advice, the consent, the wisdom, the guidance.
02:39I look forward to working with all of you and other senators
02:42to ensure the Defense Department has what it needs, that our nation has what it needs,
02:47and that we're prepared to defend it in all moments.
02:50To my staff, amazing staff, who were with us this entire process,
02:54I see so many of you through thick and thin.
02:58We used to look at the betting odds every once in a while on this.
03:01It was low at one point.
03:03Never do that.
03:06And there were so many folks on the inside and then allies on the outside
03:11who stood by us every single moment, and we are eternally grateful for that.
03:17And I want to thank the warfighters.
03:20I want to thank the men and women wearing the uniform.
03:22And I've said this before when I speak, and I mean it.
03:25Every time I stand at a podium and there's bright lights and cameras,
03:29the first thing that goes through my head are the guys that I served with on the battlefield,
03:35the men and the women who I locked shields with and put my life on the line with,
03:40who never get the spotlight, who never have the cameras,
03:44who people don't know what they did in dark and dangerous places.
03:48But I know.
03:50And at the Pentagon, we're going to remember and we're going to know.
03:52And we're going to think about those warriors with every single decision that we make.
03:57We will put America first.
03:58We will bring peace through strength.
04:00And the three principles I talked about are what we will bring to that Pentagon.
04:04Restore the warrior ethos in everything that we do, rebuild our military, and reestablish deterrence.
04:11We don't want to fight wars.
04:13We want to deter them, as you said, and we want to end them responsibly.
04:16But if we need to fight them, we're going to bring overwhelming and decisive force
04:20to close with and destroy the enemy and bring our boys home.
04:34And to my other family that's here as well, who I love, it's the honor of a lifetime.
04:41And I would be remiss if I didn't know one person in this room who doesn't expect to be recognized,
04:46but Captain Rougeau is here.
04:49He was my company commander on my first deployment in Guantanamo Bay.
04:55He was there on June 3, 2003, when I first swore in as a second lieutenant at Princeton University,
05:03and he swore me in.
05:04And I wanted to make sure he was here today with me as well.
05:07Thank you very much, sir.
05:16So, Mr. President, thank you very much to the American people.
05:18We have your back.
05:19We're going to get to work right away.
05:21God bless.
05:30All right, I guess that's it.
05:31Any questions?
05:39Guys, let me answer that for the new secretary.
05:43All people in our armed services should trust him because he looks out for them,
05:46and he's going to fight for them, and he's going to make sure that we have the kind of military
05:49that we can all be proud of, and that, again, when we send it to do a job, we do it well,
05:55we do it quickly, and then we get the hell out.
05:57And that's what Secretary Hexett is going to bring to the Department of Defense.
06:00Anything else?
06:06You know, as I learned with the Buckeyes just a week ago,
06:11when you win the championship, you don't give a damn what the score was.
06:14We won the championship on this one.
06:16We've got a great Secretary of Defense.
06:17We're proud of him, and he's going to do a great job.
06:19Thank you all.
06:20Take care.
06:26Don't miss out.
