Behind the scenes of Saturday Night Live, not everything was laughs and comedy. We're diving into the surprising and intense rivalries between some of the most iconic SNL stars that you never knew existed!
Transcript
00:00I was very lucky to intersect with Mike Myers.
00:02Sure.
00:03You know what I mean? So you get a bigger perspective when life gets tough.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the
00:11Saturday Night Live staff members who have beefed over their work.
00:14No work environment is worth that in my mind.
00:22Number 10. Charles Rockett vs. Eddie Murphy.
00:25And now, weekend update with anchorman Charles Rockett.
00:30Good evening, I'm Charles Rockett. Here now, the news.
00:33Did you know that Lorne Michaels wasn't always the SNL showrunner?
00:37Michaels, as well as the show's original cast, exited SNL prior to the 1980-81 season,
00:42ushering in a tumultuous production era which saw low morale and high turnover.
00:47Charles Rockett, hired for this season,
00:49had been groomed by new executive producer Gene Dumanian to be the show's new breakout star.
00:54In Las Vegas, where none of the hotels and casinos conform to present city fire codes,
01:00and where ladders only reach the ninth floor, many of the taller hotels, in an effort to
01:04reassure their guests, have incorporated the special linen fire escape devices pictured here.
01:09After an embarrassing gaffe that saw Rockett use the F-word live on air,
01:13the show turned its focus to the newly hired Eddie Murphy, who went on to become
01:17a massive superstar and is sometimes credited with having saved the show.
01:22Rockett, bitter at being passed up, is alleged to have openly hated Murphy.
01:37No one can deny that the SNL seasons starring Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and David Spade are
01:42some of the most iconic and memorable. But for Sweeney, being one of the only
01:46women during the bad boys of SNL era didn't work out well. She did find success with her
01:51androgynous character Pat, but other than that, Sweeney was relegated to few line parts and
02:00background characters. After her fourth season, she left the show to pursue other projects,
02:05including the feature film It's Pat. She's since gone on to have a lengthy movie and TV career,
02:15with several successful one-woman shows. That'll show them, Julia.
02:22Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan were beloved during their times on SNL,
02:26with characters like the Roxbury guys still making us laugh hysterically. However,
02:31things allegedly got frosty during production for the A Night at the Roxbury movie.
02:36Kattan, in his memoir, claims he was pressured by SNL creator Lorne Michaels to pursue a romantic
02:42relationship with a prominent potential director for the movie. Kattan reportedly went along with
02:47it and maintained that Ferrell then disapprovingly gave him the silent treatment before ending the
02:53friendship. We hope they can mend fences and bring the Roxbury guys back at least one more time.
03:047. Victoria Jackson vs. Everyone
03:15When you think of labels to describe SNL cast members, religious conservative
03:19isn't necessarily the first thing that springs to mind. But Victoria Jackson reportedly rubbed
03:25numerous cast members the wrong way for, among other reasons, proselytizing about her faith.
03:30First of all, I'm a mother first, and I'm a Christian second, and I'm a wife slash lover
03:39third, and I'm a housekeeper fourth, and fifth, I'm a news reporter, Dennis, fifth in my priority.
03:48Some also took issue with her demeanor, and even her high-pitched voice,
03:53which Jackson says is caused by a medical condition.
03:57In a confrontation with cast member Al Franken, Jackson reportedly suggested it was her mission
04:09to save the other cast members from hell. Jackson has become even more outspoken about her beliefs
04:15since leaving SNL. 6. Jim Brewer vs.
04:26Adam McKay It's well known that writers and cast members
04:30duke it out to get their sketches on air. But no cast member has been quite as vocal about this
04:34challenge as Jim Brewer. In the years since he left SNL, he's spoken profusely about his
04:40run-ins with head writer Adam McKay. That name might sound familiar. He co-wrote famous comedies
04:46like Anchorman and directed Oscar-nominated films like Don't Look Up. Back in their SNL days,
04:51McKay and Brewer frequently butted heads about sketches. In fact, producer Lorne Michaels asked
05:06Jim to play nice with McKay. When he said he wouldn't, Brewer was promptly let go from the
05:10show after only three seasons. 5. Tracy Morgan vs. Chris
05:20Cattan and Sherry Oteri SNL cast members are professionals,
05:24so it's not easy to tell just by watching who does and doesn't like each other. Aside from
05:29Jimmy Fallon, Tracy Morgan said he also had a conflict with two of his castmates, the aforementioned
05:35Chris Cattan and Sherry Oteri. In his autobiography, I Am the New Black, Morgan says, in very profane
05:42terms, that he received poor treatment from Cattan and Oteri, and mocked the state of their post-SNL
05:48careers. And he didn't just leave it there. When the time came to record the audiobook,
05:53Morgan went further into his issues with the stars. Be good to Tracy Morgan, or he won't be good to
05:58you. 4. John Belushi vs. Female Writers & Cast
06:07John Belushi is widely considered to be one of the best cast members in the history of SNL.
06:18But it seems that his views on gender were anything but good.
06:22According to fellow cast member Jane Curtin, Belushi and others involved with crafting the
06:27show did their best to prevent material from female writers from getting through the draft stage.
06:48And Belushi also reportedly claimed on numerous occasions that women were not funny.
06:55While a cast member doesn't have to like every idea they're offered,
06:59they obviously don't have to take it to an offensive and wrong generalization.
07:03No! He'd rather have more office space! He's probably never seen The Rock yet!
07:09He's probably never saw Grimm's Fairy Tales or tried out that bun! He's got...
07:173. Mike Myers vs. Dana Carvey
07:25The stars behind one of SNL's greatest duos, Wayne's World hosts Wayne and Garth,
07:31were not always so friendly behind the scenes.
07:34There were reportedly some pretty big wedges between Mike Myers and Dana Carvey.
07:38Um, you know, it's funny when we see each other, we just talk all over each other.
07:43Word was that Myers tried to keep Carvey from playing Garth in the first Wayne's World movie,
07:47since he didn't want to be potentially outshone.
07:50What am I, some sort of chimp with you as always as Garth? Jim to your Marlon Perkins?
07:56Carvey also reportedly had a grudge,
07:58claiming that Myers had stolen his impression of Lorne Michaels
08:02and used it for the Dr. Evil character in the Austin Powers film.
08:06Okay then, we hold the world ransom for 100 billion dollars.
08:17Myers and Carvey have reunited multiple times since SNL, so bygones may be bygones.
08:23Yeah right, a monkey's might fly out of my butt.
08:27Yeah, alright.
08:29Number 2. Chris Kattan vs. Norm Macdonald
08:32Chris Kattan is certainly no stranger to SNL feuds.
08:36In a Rolling Stone interview, cast member Norm Macdonald, not known for his sense of restraint,
08:41had some choice words about Kattan, saying, among other things,
08:45that he didn't think Kattan was funny.
08:47And I don't know what happened, he just started...
08:50Garth Brooks was, oh we did like a pitch meeting,
08:52and he started saying things in the pitch meeting like you don't wanna do.
08:55Kattan is quoted in the same article as calling Macdonald
08:58an offensive word that starts with an A.
09:01Are you sure they understand what you're saying?
09:04This all took place when both Kattan and Macdonald were on the show,
09:08and according to at least one source,
09:10Macdonald didn't keep his dislike for Kattan private on set either.
09:13However, after Macdonald unexpectedly passed away in 2021,
09:18Kattan revealed that the feud had been partly embellished for the sake of the media,
09:22and that these two wildly different comedians actually shared a mutual respect
09:26and a quote, comedic love.
09:29Frankly, usually I try to have some kind of ironic twist or moral in these things,
09:33but I got nothing this time.

09:491. Chevy Chase vs. Bill Murray
09:54There have been plenty of disagreements between SNL cast members,
09:58but this one became physical.
10:00When Chevy Chase returned to SNL as a host, he wasn't welcomed by all.
10:05Chase was confronted by Murray,
10:07and it soon turned from a war of words into a more intense altercation,
10:12right before airtime.
10:20Things stopped before it had a chance to really get ugly,
10:23but apparently, there was no sustained animosity between Murray and Chase,
10:27and the two later shared a memorable scene together in Caddyshack.
10:34In an interview with Howard Stern, Chase revealed that although Murray and Chase
10:37were close friends, they didn't get along well.
10:40He said,
10:40Who is your favorite SNL cast member of all time?
