PH gov't launches comic book to battle disinformation on West PH Sea dispute

Department of Education Secretary Sonny Angara, National Security Adviser Eduardo Año, Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela, and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan led the book launch of “The Stories of Teacher Jun (Ang Mga Kwento ni Teacher Jun)” at the National Library of the Philippines in Manila on Friday, Jan. 24.  This is to counter China's disinformation regarding the territorial disputes with the Philippines along the West Philippine Sea. 00:09The first part introduces the wartime zones outlined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,

00:16explained in very simple terms by Acorinita Umbaka.

00:20He used the analogy of a house, fences, and a backyard to illustrate the concept.

00:27The second part discusses the long-standing, legitimate historical accounts

00:32that support our position in the West Philippines,

00:35including references to the 1734 Molinco-Villard demand and various treaties that helped establish our claims.

00:44The third part of the book addresses the 2016 Arbitral Oath,

00:49which emphasizes the invalidation of the People's Republic of China's 9-9 Treaty.

00:55The fourth chapter explores how fake news and disinformation distort factual narratives

01:02and impact public perception of the issue.

01:05The following chapter highlights the government's efforts towards transparency

01:10and exposing Chinese aggression to counter misinformation and foster a sense of patriotism among Filipinos.

01:18Finally, the last chapter of the book depicts conversation among the young characters.

01:24Each expressing aspirations to contribute to the fight for the West Philippines.

01:33Let's give ourselves a round of applause for the unveiling of our comic book,

01:37Amacuento Incubus, a ceremonial comic book.

01:40This symbolizes the official turnover of intellectual property rights

01:44from the National Task Force of the West Philippine Sea to the Department of Education,

01:49granting them full authority to reproduce and distribute copies of this invaluable comic book.

01:55Chinese officials, along with state-sponsored media and individuals,

02:00continue to spread distorted and twisted narratives to malign our efforts

02:07and justify their illegal unilateral claims.

02:12This initiative aims to highlight our maritime rights and entitlements

02:17while revealing China's unlawful activities, aggressive behavior, and bullying tactics.

02:25It is crucial for us to shed light on these actions,

02:30as transparency is a very powerful tool in combating misinformation.
