Friday the 13th was far from being the first slasher movie ever made, but it probably defines the genre more than any other film. The story and set-up are simple — a masked man stalks teenagers and young adults who only want to party and have sex (except for that first film where the killer is actually Jason's mother).

00:00After all these years and so many sequels, it can be hard to remember what really happened
00:05in all the Friday the 13th movies.
00:08Let's take a deep dive into Crystal Lake and map out the entire gruesome story.
00:12What's the worst that can happen?
00:14In the original Friday the 13th, audiences first heard the sad, sinister story of young
00:19Jason Voorhees.
00:21He drowned at Camp Crystal Lake in 1958 after two counselors took their eyes off the boys
00:25to go have some sexy time.
00:28Those two counselors were murdered, and the camp was subsequently shuttered.
00:31The camp reopens two decades later, but it still has a reputation for murder and mayhem,
00:37and rightly so.
00:38Meet Annie, freshly hired as a camp counselor.
00:41She hitchhikes to Crystal Lake, opting to ignore the warnings of Crazy Ralph, a generic
00:45townie who asks if she's going to Camp Blood.
00:49"...You'll never come back again!"
00:51"...Oh, shut up, Ralph."
00:53"...It's got a death curse!"
00:58But maybe Crazy Ralph isn't so crazy after all.
01:01Annie is chased through the woods by an unseen assailant and brutally murdered, and she's
01:05just one of several counselors to meet a grisly end.
01:08It turns out Jason Voorhees isn't the killer in the first installment.
01:12The murderer is his mom, Pamela, who doesn't want the camp reopened because of her son's
01:16death.
01:17Annie's tears of grief have curdled into madness, and Mrs. Voorhees hears her son's voice urging
01:22her to kill.
01:23Fortunately, an intrepid camp counselor named Alice decapitates Pamela Voorhees, and that's
01:28the end of this particular bad mama.
01:31At the end of the film, Alice has a nightmare in which she's attacked by the rotting corpse
01:34of young Jason Voorhees.
01:36It's surely one of the greatest jump scares of all time.
01:48Alice swears it wasn't a dream, but police say they never found a body.
01:53Strange, isn't it?
01:55Friday the 13th Part II kicks off two months after the events of the first film.
01:59We learn that Alice is still haunted by the night she killed Pamela Voorhees.
02:04Little does she know that Jason is still alive, and he's been living out in the woods.
02:08Jason tracks down Alice and totally kills her, but not before stashing Mrs. Voorhees'
02:13head in the fridge.
02:14As you might already know, Jason's trademark hockey mask doesn't make an appearance until
02:18the third installment of the franchise.
02:20Instead, we get sackcloth Jason, and here's how that plays out.
02:25This time, Jason is going after a whole bunch of camp counselors in training.
02:33Clearly, the legend of Jason Voorhees has grown over the years, which we learn during
02:41a bone-chilling exposition dump, courtesy of head counselor Paul.
02:44"...but I'm gonna give it to you straight about Jason.
02:50His body was never recovered from the lake after he drowned."
02:54Jason does what he does best, using a variety of weapons including a hammer, a spear, and
02:58a machete.
02:59He dispassionately stalks and murders camp counselors, until only Ginny is left.
03:05She eventually finds Jason's shrine to his mom, with her decapitated head front and center.
03:09To elude Jason, Ginny pretends to be Pamela Voorhees by putting on her old pullover and
03:14stealing her hairstyle.
03:16He doesn't fall for it, because who would?
03:18It's all done, Jason.
03:19You've done your job well, and mommy is pleased."
03:24After Ginny conquers Jason, she hobbles back to her cabin to decompress.
03:28She soon learns that a cute little dog named Muffin survived the whole ordeal.
03:32Friday the 13th Part III is distinguished by two major game-changers.
03:37It's the first time Jason shows off his iconic hockey mask, and it's the first entry in which
03:41he isn't expressly terrorizing a campground.
03:44Meet Chris.
03:45Years before, she was attacked by a masked figure in the woods near her home on Crystal
03:50Lake.
03:51Chris tries to confront her trauma by returning to the scene, hoping it will help her to heal.
03:55She decides to bring a few friends along for the ride, because why not make it a party?
03:59I shouldn't have come back here so soon.
04:01I don't want to get to you.
04:03Relax.
04:04Enjoy the weekend.
04:06Some of Chris' friends antagonize a bunch of scary bikers, who retaliate by trying to
04:10burn down her barn.
04:11That's when we learn that a wounded Jason had been hiding in there.
04:14He immediately starts killing everyone.
04:17In their final confrontation, Jason reveals his face to Chris, and it turns out he's the
04:21one who stalked her all those years ago.
04:24She finally dispatches him with an axe to the head.
04:26And here's an interesting factoid for you.
04:29The 1982 film was originally released in 3-D like several other horror sequels from the
04:34era, including the awful Jaws 3-D and the satanic snooze-fest Amityville 3-D.
04:40Now we arrive at Friday the 13th The Final Chapter.
04:43Following his apparent death in Friday the 13th Part III, Jason is taken to the Higgins
04:48Haven morgue, where he quickly proves he's not quite dead.
04:51He immediately kills a few staffers, just to keep his hand in.
04:54Soon enough, Crystal Lake beckons, and Jason, much like Lassie, makes his way back home.
05:00Friday the 13th The Final Chapter introduces audiences to Tommy, played by Corey Feldman,
05:05and his sister Trish, played by Kimberly Beck.
05:07They're both visiting their Crystal Lake summer home.
05:09They soon meet a rowdy group of high schoolers hanging out in a neighboring house for the
05:13weekend.
05:14Tommy is a quirky kid obsessed with creature features, and he even makes his own monster
05:18masks as you can see.
05:20Jason's killing spree inevitably brings him to Tommy and Trish's house, and the quick-thinking
05:24Tommy fights back using everything he knows about Jason Voorhees.
05:28He shaves his head and covers his face with white powder, trying to remind the masked
05:32killer of himself at a young age.
05:34Remember me, Jason?
05:37Jason, don't you remember?
05:42This gives Trish a chance to use Jason's machete against him, and his mask falls off to reveal
05:47his increasingly monstrous face.
05:53In the end, Jason is seemingly killed, and Tommy looks into the camera with an expression
05:57that suggests he might never recover.
05:59Meanwhile, the Friday the 13th franchise bounced back soon enough.
06:04In Friday the 13th A New Beginning, we learn that Tommy Jarvis was indeed psychologically
06:08scarred by his encounter with Jason.
06:11As you can see, the experience has totally changed him.
06:14In fact, the character is played by a different actor, John Shepard.
06:18Five years after the events of Friday the 13th The Final Chapter, Tommy still suffers
06:22from severe post-traumatic stress, experiencing flashbacks and extreme anxiety.
06:27As you can see, he's quite the disturbed young man.
06:30Travis is admitted into a rural treatment facility, one that's literally full of farm
06:34animals.
06:35The staff at Pinehurst Halfway House hopes to help the young man get a better handle
06:39on his past, and as you can see, this is a rare sort of treatment facility that lets
06:43patients keep sharps at the ready.
06:45Case in point, on Tommy's first day, patients Vic and Joey get into a deadly disagreement.
06:51To be perfectly honest with you, I never really chopped wood before, but it certainly looks
06:55like fun.
06:56Leave me alone!"
06:59Before you know it, Vic murders poor Joey with his trusty axe.
07:03Paramedics rush to the scene.
07:04Is there someone we should notify?
07:05As far as I know, there's no immediate family."
07:11Suddenly, employees and patients are getting killed by a maniac in a hockey mask, and everyone
07:17thinks Jason is back.
07:18But something here doesn't add up.
07:20For one thing, the killer's hockey mask has blue stripes instead of Jason's signature
07:24red.
07:25Could this be a clue that the killer isn't who he appears to be?
07:28Could Trouble Tommy be the culprit?
07:30We eventually learn that Roy, one of the paramedics that collected poor Joey's corpse, was secretly
07:35the boy's father.
07:36Turns out, Roy had a psychotic break after his son's death and decided to become a professional
07:40copycat killer.
07:41Well, Tommy Jarvis just couldn't leave well enough alone.
07:55At the start of Friday the 13th Part VI, Jason Lives, the troubled young man takes a close
07:59friend to Jason's grave in Crystal Lake.
08:01Notice that Tommy is once again played by a different actor, Tom Matthews, this time.
08:06Once they find the grave, they dig it up and shove a metal rod into Jason's rotting corpse.
08:11That's when lightning suddenly strikes the rod, instantly reviving Jason.
08:15The undead killer attacks Tommy and kills his up-for-anything friend.
08:19Tommy narrowly escapes with his life.
08:21Of course, the police don't believe Tommy's story because of his past mental health issues.
08:25No way, you gotta listen to me!
08:27Jason's coming here, he's after me!
08:29The sheriff's daughter Megan is the only one who believes Tommy, and she decides to help
08:33him out.
08:34Jason quickly makes it back to the place where he originally died, and plenty of children
08:38are already there for summer camp.
08:40Jason scares the kids, but for some reason, he doesn't actually hurt any of them.
08:44Meanwhile, he gleefully kills every adult and teenager within a five-mile radius.
08:49Thankfully, Tommy eventually wraps Jason in some chains and drowns him.
08:53Or does he?
08:55In Friday the 13th Part VII The New Blood, we're introduced to the talented Tina Shepard.
09:00She's your average American girl with telekinesis, and we learn that she accidentally killed
09:04her father by drowning him in Crystal Lake.
09:07Tina is understandably traumatized by the death of her father.
09:10Many years later, Tina's sketchy therapist Dr. Cruise pressures her into returning to
09:14Crystal Lake to confront her fears, or so he says.
09:18What he's really trying to do is understand the scope of Tina's powers by using Crystal
09:22Lake as a trigger.
09:23She feels tremendous grief when she stands in the spot where her father drowned, and
09:27she also senses a dark presence.
09:30It's Jason, and he finally manages to break free from his chains.
09:34Needless to say, the killings begin again.
09:36Meanwhile, a bunch of teens are preparing for the world's wackest birthday party.
09:40The party hasn't even started yet, and already this place looks like closing time at the
09:44stock exchange.
09:45Russ, honey, we'll clean it up, I promise.
09:48Yeah, chill out Brooks Brothers.
09:50Tina starts getting cozy with Hunky Nick, and Jason basically kills everyone.
09:54In the film's finale, Tina has an epic showdown with Jason, with her telekinetic powers on
09:59full display.
10:00Look, she can even move couches with her mind.
10:03She unmasks Jason, and discovers that he's really let himself go.
10:07Oh, and then the ghost of Tina's father helps chain Jason to the bottom of the lake.
10:11Since that worked so well the last time, Tina and Nick both survive.
10:15Where's Jason?
10:16We took care of him.
10:19Important note, The New Blood is the film that features the notorious sleeping bag murder.
10:25And then, this happened.
10:26The first half of Friday the 13th Part VIII Jason Takes Manhattan takes place on a cruise
10:31And we watch proudly as Crystal Lake's graduating seniors embark on a class trip to the Big
10:36Apple.
10:37Little do they know that the anchor of another boat has come into contact with some ominous
10:41underwater wires.
10:42An electrical current zaps Jason's chains and reanimates him again.
10:47He eventually climbs aboard the cruise ship in broad daylight and starts killing a bunch
10:51of recent high school graduates.
10:52To escape all the unthinkable horror, a handful of survivors take a raft to Manhattan's shore.
10:58But they fail to realize that Jason has followed them.
11:00And how does he fare in the big city?
11:02Pretty well, actually.
11:03Yo, man, it's cool.
11:04It's cool, man.
11:05It's cool.
11:06In the end, final girl Renny faces off with Jason deep within the New York sewer system,
11:19and she eventually gets her hands on some extremely toxic waste.
11:28The film ends with Jason getting hammered by even more toxic gunk, which presumably
11:36kills him.
11:37In the final scene, Renny enjoys New York with her boyfriend Sean and cute little dog
11:41Toby.
11:43Jason Goes to Hell The Final Friday isn't the final entry in the series, but it's quite
11:47possibly the weirdest.
11:49The trouble begins when the FBI intercepts Jason on his way back to Crystal Lake, killing
11:54him for the millionth time.
11:56Things get especially complicated when a medical examiner decides to take a bite out of Jason's
12:01still-beating heart.
12:02Soon enough, some sort of Spirit Jason starts taking over people's bodies, and all hell
12:07breaks loose.
12:15Jason Goes to Hell introduces some new supernatural elements to the franchise.
12:19For instance, we learn that only a member of Jason's bloodline can kill him, and only
12:24if they're armed with a special dagger.
12:26Jason's half-niece Jessica soon rises to the task and stabs Jason with a magic blade.
12:31In the end, Jason's mask is all that remains, until Freddy Krueger's claws emerge from the
12:36ground to drag the mask down to hell.
12:38Meanwhile, the Friday the 13th franchise remained up here on Earth.
12:43Much like the rest of us, Jason X tries to pretend Jason Goes to Hell never happened.
12:47The 2001 film takes place in deep space and many years into the future.
12:52The planet Earth has been ravaged by overpopulation, war, and climate change.
12:57Scientists from the artlessly named Earth-2 are on a field trip to take samples.
13:02They soon discover the cryogenically frozen Jason inside the Crystal Lake Research Facility,
13:07and they decide it's a great idea to bring his body onto their ship.
13:10Jason soon thaws out, jumpstarting a highly convoluted plot that draws heavily from Alien
13:15and the Terminator series.
13:17He obligatorily kills almost every member of the crew, at one point even battling an
13:21android named KM-15.
13:24She wounds and almost kills Jason, but as usual, he just won't die.
13:28You've got to be kidding me."
13:32Freddy vs. Jason was an epic monster mash-up that combined two competing franchises.
13:37The story finds A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Krueger in quite a pickle.
13:41He's lost a great deal of his power because Springwood residents just aren't afraid of
13:44him like they used to be.
13:47Not strong enough yet.
13:51So he hatches the perfect plan.
13:53Back in Hell, Freddy poses as Pamela Voorhees and awakens Jason.
13:57You are like a big super dog who can't stop eating, even though your master said you've
14:05had enough!
14:08Jason is supposed to remind the people of Springwood that Freddy is still a force to
14:11be reckoned with.
14:12Go ahead and call it the ultimate PR nightmare.
14:15But things don't go as planned.
14:25Jason winds up simply killing his prey instead of luring them to Freddy.
14:28The teenagers at the center of the story come up with a confusing plan of their own.
14:33They want to drag Freddy out of Hell and back into reality so Jason can definitively kill
14:38him.
14:39The final confrontation finds Freddy loading up on one-liners while Jason maintains his
14:43silent singular focus.
14:45In the end, Freddy gets decapitated by one of the teens, but his severed head later gives
14:49the audience a wink.
14:51What a coy little minx.
14:53The 2009 Friday the 13th reboot tried to bring the franchise back from the dead.
14:57Once again, young Jason witnesses his mom get decapitated by a desperate camp counselor.
15:02Decades later, a group of youngsters head to Crystal Lake to search for an illegal pot
15:06farm.
15:07Jason stalks and kills them all, except for young Whitney.
15:10He kidnaps her because he thinks she looks a lot like his dear, dead mom.
15:14Six weeks later, Whitney's brother Clay is still looking for his missing sister.
15:18He goes door-to-door and eventually finds Jason, who's been busy racking up more victims.
15:23Clay ultimately frees his sister, and they team up to kill the sick jerk once and for
15:27all.
15:35Clay dumps Jason's body into the lake, but at the very last minute, the unstoppable maniac
15:40jumps up and grabs Whitney.
15:42Despite the cliffhanger ending, this is the last we've seen of Jason on the silver screen
15:46— for now, anyway.
