00:09But in Greenland, where catastrophic predictions about glacial melt are already staggering,
00:14it turns out the speed at which those massive ice sheets are melting is even faster than

00:19Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin say that there have, up until now,
00:22been too many gaps in the data, with researchers using data from the glaciers they can actually
00:26get to to make predictive models of how all glaciers work.
00:30But it seems it's all about location, meaning you can't necessarily extrapolate Antarctic
00:34ice sheet data and use that in places like Greenland.
00:37And it turns out, after looking at the way Greenland's warmer ocean water is melting
00:40their massive ice sheet from the bottom up, things are looking grimmer than ever.
00:43They say that Greenland's ice sheet might be melting 100 times faster than was previously
00:48predicted.
00:49In 2019, scientists estimated that 500 billion tons of ice melted or broke away from the
00:54continent and floated out to sea.
00:56When Greenland's massive sheet of ice melts, the world will be treated to inches of sea
01:00level rise, the acidification of our oceans, and global currents will be thrown into chaos.
