The Royal Malaysian Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle frozen meat and various types of food, including frog meat believed to be intended for distribution during Chinese New Year.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday (Jan 24), Customs Selangor assistant director-general Norlela Ismail said the seizure of the items, worth over RM1.4mil, followed inspections of four refrigerated containers at West Port and North Port on Dec 9 and 12.

00:00The first case is related to electrical equipment.
00:07This case was reported on 28th November, 4th December and 10th December last year.
00:14The Central Customs Force, Unit 2 Selangor, has detained 4 containers.
00:223 containers at West Port and 1 container at North Port of Selangor.
00:31After investigation, the Central Customs Force has found various electrical equipment
00:37such as electric rice cooker, electric pressure cooker, mini rice cooker and steam air fryer oven.
00:46All these electrical equipment do not have Certificate of Approval from Suruhanjaya Tenaga
00:57and Institute Piyawayan Penyelidikan Perindustrian Malaysia or SIRIM.
01:03The quantity that has been confiscated is 11,080 units worth of RM678,000.
01:12The duty and fine involved is RM210,780.
01:20This case is still under investigation.
01:23The second case is related to gunpowder, including gunpowder from Punyah.
01:30This case was reported on 23rd October and 12th November last year.
01:36The Central Customs Force, Unit 2 Selangor, has detained 3 containers measuring 20 feet in size,
01:442 at North Port and 1 at West Port of Selangor.
01:51After investigation, the Central Customs Force has found 8,184 kilograms of gunpowder or chewing tobacco
02:02and 1,560.5 kilograms of raw gunpowder which is suspected to not have import permit.
02:12The total quantity confiscated is 9,744.5 kilograms
02:19and the total transaction value is estimated to be RM720,397.
02:27The duty and fine involved is RM976,919.
02:35This case is still under investigation.
02:38The third case is related to meat and frozen food theft.
02:46This case was reported on 9th and 12th December 2024
02:51where the Central Customs Force, Unit 2 Selangor, has detained 4 containers
02:591 at North Port and 3 at West Port of Selangor.
03:09After investigation, the Central Customs Force has found various types of frozen meat
03:16such as frozen chicken breast, frozen lamb meat, frozen duck and frozen frog
03:23as well as frozen food such as shrimp dumpling, bao, corn dumpling and others.
03:31All of these transactions are suspected to not have import permit
03:35issued by the Malaysian Government.
03:42The total quantity confiscated is 77,059 kilograms
03:48and the total transaction value is estimated to be RM1.4 million.
03:54The duty and fine involved is RM34,137.
04:01Meat and frozen food theft is suspected to be an import permit
04:07issued by the Malaysian Government under Article 1 of Article 3 of the Customs Law
04:14prohibiting the import of goods under Article 2023.
04:17This case is still under investigation.
04:20Initial investigation found that the goods were imported from a country in Asia.
04:25All three cases were investigated under Section 135-1-A of the Customs Act 1967
04:36i.e. the importation of illegal goods.
04:40If proven guilty, the court can issue a penalty
04:45not less than 10 times the value of the goods
04:49or RM100,000 which is higher
04:52and not more than 20 times the value of the goods
04:56or RM500,000 which is higher
04:59or imprisonment not less than 6 months
05:02and not more than 5 years or both.
