00:00A Johor Bahru High Court judge on Friday acquitted two men accused of drug trafficking after
00:10finding significant flaws in the prosecution's case, including questionable testimony from
00:15a police officer and inconsistencies in the investigation.
00:20In delivering his decision, Judicial Commissioner Kan Weng Hin had criticized the testimony
00:26of a police officer who claimed to have witnessed a drug transaction from 1.9 kilometers away
00:32along a curved road.
00:33The judge sarcastically remarked that the officer must have had superman vision to see
00:38such details from that distance, calling it an extraordinary claim.
00:43He also ticked off the investigation, saying it was shoddy and that he found fatal discrepancies
00:48in the sketch plan and statements of three witnesses, who were all police personnel including
00:53the investigating officer.
00:55The two men, 50-year-old odd-job worker Abdullah Jafar and 45-year-old fisherman Mohamad Sofrifai
01:02Zalmoin, were charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act for allegedly trafficking
01:081.433 kilograms of methamphetamine at Kampung Permas Kelapa, Pontian, in December 2020.
01:16Justice Kan ruled that the prosecution failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
01:22He says the prosecution has a duty to ensure the truth is uncovered, especially in serious
01:27cases like this.
01:29The prosecution called five witnesses, while the defense brought in three witnesses, including
01:34someone who measured the distance between the policeman and the transaction.
01:39Both men and their families were relieved with the court's decision, and were grateful
01:43that their five-year nightmare had finally come to an end.
