00:00There is a cry for help for Billy Ray Cyrus.
00:03You may have seen his alarming performance
00:07on Inauguration Night.
00:08Seen and heard.
00:09There is apparently a lot behind that.
00:13I'm going to take my horse to the old town road.
00:16I'm going to.
00:17I'm going to take my horse to the old town road.
00:23So at first, we just thought there were technical problems.
00:27There was no music.
00:28It didn't play.
00:29And he didn't sound good.
00:30Right, that he just had a horse.
00:31Maybe he had the flu or something.
00:33But there, apparently, within his family,
00:37people think there are signs that what you saw there
00:41is a reflection of a struggle that he has been going through.
00:44Something much deeper.
00:46At least according to his son, Trace,
00:49who clearly feels like his dad is going through much more
00:54than just technical issues on stage and some illness.
00:58This is what Trace had to say.
00:59He said, sadly, the man that I wanted so desperately
01:02to be just like, I barely recognize now.
01:05It seems this world has beaten you down
01:07and it's become obvious to everyone but you.
01:10We are all hanging on to memories
01:12of the man we once knew and hoping for the day he returns.
01:16You're not healthy, dad, and everyone is noticing it.
01:20I don't know what you're struggling with exactly,
01:22but I think I have a pretty good idea.
01:24And I'd love to help you if you would open up
01:27and receive the help.
01:28You know how to reach me.
01:29Now, he went on to say that he's been sober for a year
01:33and a half, Trace, and is telling Billy Ray Cyrus
01:38that it works.
01:39I think it's not hard to read between the lines here.
01:42He's saying his dad has a serious addiction problem
01:44and he's saying his dad will not acknowledge it.
01:47And from the way this is written,
01:50it seems that they have tried privately to shake him and get
01:56him help.
01:57Beyond how it's affecting his performance,
02:00the other thing Trace leaned into,
02:01he said it's affecting Billy Ray's relationship with his kids.
02:06And this is the way addiction works,
02:10that what happens is it often starts out social
02:13and it ends up very isolating.
02:16And it sounds like, at least if you believe Trace's version,
02:20that Billy Ray is in the isolating stage
02:24and that he just refuses help.
02:26And this was kind of the last resort.
02:29Right.
02:29This feels like a very public intervention, honestly,
02:32is what it feels like.
02:33Because Trace is addressing him directly on social media,
02:36but everybody can see it.
02:37Also brings his sisters in, says that his sister Noah,
02:41he's never been there for her, but he and Noah
02:43both still idolize him.
02:44We know that when Miley Cyrus won at the Grammys last year,
02:46she thanked everybody but Billy Ray Cyrus.
02:49So maybe they had that kind of rock bottom moment
02:51where they lost a relationship, but it
02:52seems like they desperately want it back.
02:54You know, the rock bottom moment, that's the words,
02:57those are the two words that alcoholics use,
03:01that they hit rock bottom before they get help.
03:04And you can't get help because somebody else
03:06wants you to get help.
03:07You got to get help because you want it.
03:09And it sounds like he not only doesn't want it,
03:13he doesn't think he needs it.
03:14At least that's according to his son.
03:17Yeah, but I think what Eric said is correct about Trace.
03:21It does feel like maybe they did try something privately,
03:24it didn't work, and so now, for lack of a better word,
03:30they're shaming him, right, publicly.
03:32Trace is, and I don't think he intends it as shame,
03:35I think he's calling it out, what he sees,
03:37what Trace sees as the problem.
03:38Well, and it's something we've all seen now.
03:39So that it forces Billy Ray.
03:40At the inauguration, you know, that performance,
03:42everybody saw it.
03:43This isn't just something happening with the family,
03:45everyone saw that performance.
03:46Yeah, except that I, you know, Eric, I saw it too,
03:48and I actually, I felt badly for Billy Ray
03:51after I watched his performance
03:52because I thought most of this
03:54was just about the technical issues.
03:56And there were technical issues.
03:57But as far as his singing and, or his attempt at singing,
04:03I thought that was just an illness, you know, like a cold.
04:06You know, it's funny, you say that I felt exactly
04:08the way you did, but after reading what Trace said,
04:12watching it again, I see it differently.
04:16Lily from Fort Worth, Texas here.
04:19As a millennial, I grew up watching Billy Ray
04:22and Miley Ray TV, and it's just really sad
04:25to see how their family feud is playing out so publicly.
04:29Trace hasn't really spoken up about any of the feud.
04:33So to see him even mention anything about his family,
04:36it's really telling about what's going on behind the scenes.
04:40And Billy Ray's performance was not good at all.
04:43So I hope he takes the time to reflect,
04:45really listen to Trace and the rest of his family
04:47moving forward.
04:48Yeah, it's really sad.
04:49I mean, repeated thousands of times around the country.
04:51Yeah, and the other part of this backstory here,
04:54and I think it's probably relevant.
04:56Remember, Billy Ray went through this annulment last year
05:00and a very bad breakup with his-
05:02And his now ex-wife actually talked about substance abuse
05:05in the course of- She made those allegations, yeah.
05:07Right.
