00:00At around 3.40pm yesterday, we were called by the West Midlands Police Ambulance Service
00:06after a boy just aged 12 years was found by a member of the public near Scribers Lane
00:10after being stabbed in the stomach. Sadly, despite the best efforts of police officers
00:16and paramedics who treated him at the scene, he lost his life later that day at about 7.30pm.
00:23Now as a result of urgent enquiries, a boy aged 14 has been arrested and that happened
00:28at 7.00pm yesterday at an address in Birmingham. He remains in custody and he's been arrested
00:33on suspicion of murder. The same 14-year-old has also been arrested for another assault
00:39for an unrelated matter and he's also in custody for that. I would ask the public not to speculate
00:44about what happened. This is a very early stage of the enquiry. We're obviously dealing
00:49with a tremendous amount of priority and detectives are working round the clock to get to the
00:54truth of what happened and are working through that. What I would urge is that anyone who
00:58was in the area of Scribers Lane around that time, so the incident happened at 3.40pm but
01:04around that time in general, they should get in touch with us and let us know where they
01:08were, if they saw anything unusual or suspicious or also just to let us know that they were
01:13in the area so we can speak to them about aspects of the enquiry that might be of interest
01:19to us. We've set up a major incident public portal which can be found on our website.
01:24So people can find that and they can upload information directly onto that. It might be
01:29CCTV, they have private CCTV, phone footage or dash cam footage of that nature. If members
01:36of the public aren't as confident using the internet around that they can still dial 101
01:42and give us information through that means and we know sometimes people aren't confident
01:47to speak to the police directly so they can still use Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
01:54This is an absolutely appalling incident. It's a very early stage of the enquiry. As
01:59I say we have got specialist detectives working on the enquiry but also supporting the loved
02:05ones of the 12 year old that's very very sadly and tragically lost his life. They're supporting
02:10at this time and that's the information that I've got at the moment. But I would encourage
02:16anyone who is in the area or has got any information at all about this incident to
02:20contact West Midlands Police through the means that I've set out and that's what I need to
02:26say today about that. There was a large number of people in the vicinity at the time. It
02:31was 3.40 in the afternoon and the school had recently ended its day so we know there were
02:37people in the area that raised the alarm to West Midlands Ambulance. It's the officer
02:42and the ambulance crew then took over that, the police officers and the ambulance crew
02:46took over that first aid.
