00:00Budget 2025 is one of the most important events this year, in which our Finance Minister Nirmala
00:14Sitaraman will present the budget in the Parliament on February 1, 2025.
00:22From the corporate sector to the education sector, everybody is very keenly waiting for
00:27the budget.
00:28Hello and welcome.
00:29My name is Shruti Sarkar and you're watching Good Returns.
00:32And in this episode of Future Focus Budget 2025, we will talk to Mayank Kumar, co-founder
00:40of Brad.
00:41Hello Mayank.
00:42Hi Shruti.
00:43Welcome to the show.
00:46My very first question is, what is your overall, as an Indian citizen, what is your overall
00:52expectations from the budget?
00:55My overall expectation will be the same as every year, that there should be more focus
01:01on employment and job creation in the economy, because it's one big area that as a country
01:07that we need to focus on.
01:10And given my area of competence or area of working has been in education, skills, learning
01:19and development.
01:20So if we can get more impetus in these sectors, that will definitely help us in creating skilled
01:27talent and skilled manpower for global deployment and global economy.
01:31So broadly, these are the two things that are most relevant for us, which I would like
01:38to focus on.
01:39I mean, I'd like to see the focus on the budgets overall.
01:44Mayank, moving forward, in this budget, what kind of probably new schemes or policies you're
01:52expecting in the education sector and especially in the edtech sector?
01:59As I said that there's no scheme that is needed.
02:01But from a policy intervention perspective, there are a couple of things that definitely
02:05should come up.
02:06I think the first thing is that as a country in India, we are not encouraged to spend on
02:13ourselves for learning.
02:14And I think today, when AI, machine learning, data science are all becoming that big, there
02:21is a significant requirement for human capital upliftment and everybody should go through
02:25skilling and reskilling, etc.
02:27So the way you get tax benefit in ATC to invest in mutual funds, I would love to see a similar
02:36strategy which can incentivize people who are currently working for their own upskilling
02:41and reskilling.
02:42A certain portion of your salary, you can invest in your own education, and there is
02:47some benefit that you get as part of similar to what ATC mutual fund life insurance schemes
02:52have made mutual fund into what they are today.
02:55So if you want to make skilling in a much larger sort of agenda for the country, I think
03:02some kind of incentivization on corporate skilling, corporate upskilling, corporate
03:06reskilling would definitely be helpful.
03:08The second thing that I think Shruti will help us with is that if we can make a public-private
03:15partnership, because artificial intelligence are areas where India can become the center
03:22for excellence.
03:23And just like India took a very strong position in IT, we can take a similar position in AI.
03:32So some kind of a budget allocation would be essential for India to boost the skill
03:37development through public-private partnership for creating AI center of excellence.
03:42If we can make that, then the vision of the government of 2047 of Viksit Bharat, a large
03:47portion of that can be potentially solved for.
03:49The third thing is a counter-intuitive point for me, because we are seeing that a lot of
03:57Indian talent is required globally.
04:01So if you are seeing that a lot of people are going abroad for study abroad or for jobs,
04:06then India receives about $125 billion worth of remittance coming in from the talent that
04:12are outside India.
04:15And I believe that as we progress in the future, more and more Indian talent will be deployed
04:20internationally.
04:21And our remittance will increase, and our remittance of $125-130 billion, it is equal
04:28to our oil import bill, it is equal to our IT export.
04:32Some kind of benefit for people who are looking at moving abroad, either for studies or for
04:37work or for jobs, because that will enable us to position India as a talent capital for
04:42the global economy.
04:43So these are the 2-3 things that I think if we focus on those, it will definitely help
04:48us in creating a much stronger presence altogether.
04:51Mahendra, you talked about AI, we talked about upskillings.
04:57I have a question, I have a different kind of question to ask.
05:00Even now, in the rural India, a lot of people are not aware, you know, awareness is something
05:07that we need to probably create in the future.
05:11How can the government promote adoption of edtech solutions, especially in the rural
05:17area?
05:18If you see, startup was not a big name earlier.
05:21But why did startup became what it became today is because a lot of evangelizing was
05:25done by the government.
05:27And I think pure play for evangelizing, I think government can play a massive role.
05:31I think if you look at the infrastructure of the government, the broader sort of presence
05:37that the government has across last mile and grassroot level, if you go to a small school
05:43in the village, they are also present there.
05:45If you go to a small post office, they are also present there.
05:49So I think at a grassroot level, the biggest role that the government can play is in evangelizing
05:54and promoting the use of AI.
05:56Aaj ke date pe, if you can use AI really well, as a farmer, you can get a much better yield
06:02for your crops.
06:04As somebody working remotely, you can find better ways in which you can enhance your
06:08productivity.
06:09Toh I think yeh saari ki saari cheezein bahut hi critical hai.
06:12Toh from my side, I don't expect any tax break or any tax incentive for this thing.
06:17But a very strong role for as an evangelist definitely will help India adopt AI in a much
06:23more meaningful manner.
06:24Agar sab kuch sahi chale toh probably very soon we can see the impact of AI in our agri
06:32sector too.
06:33You rightly said that.
06:35But having said that, ek question yeh bhi aata hai ki if it goes to the wrong hands,
06:40a lot of wrongdoings can happen.
06:43So do you believe, kya yeh aapko lagta hai ki humare government ko kuch regulations
06:51naana chahiye, be it AI, be it the ag tech sector, be it anything that is related to
06:59artificial intelligence or something that is technical?
07:02No, no.
07:03I'm completely on board with that.
07:04Just mere do do point hai, jab bhi koi nahi technology aati hai, unn technologies ke kuch
07:09positive aur kuch negative factors hamesha rehte hai.
07:12So koi cheeze positive rehegi, koi cheeze negative rehegi, that definitely will happen.
07:17But specifically to AI, mera maanana yeh hai ki the benefit far outweighs the cons
07:25that the technology brings along with it.
07:29Jis tarhi ki productivity gain ki hum baatein kar rahe hain, wo bahut hi positive hogi economy
07:34ke liye than the negative side of it.
07:36Having said that, there are negative aspects.
07:39There are biases, there are hallucinations, there are issues with AI.
07:42Aap kaise control kar sakte ho narrative on the media?
07:47Aap kaise fake, aaj ki tariq mein aapka mera koi se video, you can easily generate with
07:53AI and sort of promote it.
07:55I think all those create much different kind of issues in terms of mass adoption of AI.
08:03So I think government should not over-regulate, but definitely set the guiding framework that
08:08can define what the country could be.
08:10And I think agar aap dekhoge hawaari jo IT policy hai, ya hawaari jo technology policy
08:14hai, it is very well crafted and well built because it allows a lot of international players
08:21to come and innovate in India.
08:22Toh bahut saare international toh India mein aankhi innovate kar sakte hain.
08:26It also allows a huge amount of Indian startup ecosystem to thrive on the same infrastructure.
08:30Toh mera jo maana ye hai ki jis tarhi ke se humne technology ko regulate kiya tha aur
08:36ek guiding principle lagaya tha, ek similar kind of guiding principle definitely is needed
08:40in AI as well, which can ensure that there is a very right adoption of what AI is doing
08:47in the overall scheme of things.
08:48Before I let you go, Mayank, one last question.
08:50Agar aapko abhi the current landscape of the edtech sector humein batana hai for our viewers
08:57and probably what is the near-term or the mid-term expectations ki how will it grow
09:05further?
09:06Toh aap kya kahenge?
09:07I think yeh question bahut baar iss se bhi aata hai because there have been certain instances
09:11in the space jahaan pe ki some large players may not have played by the rule and have sort
09:17of gone on the side way.
09:19Magar dekhe education as a sector bahut bada hai.
09:22Education aisa ek sector hai aur aisa space hai jahaan pe ki aap scale pe operate kar
09:27sakte hoon.
09:29Education ek aisa space hai jahaan pe ki aap large scale impact kar sakte hoon.
09:34Education ek aisa space hai jahaan pe ki aap kisi individual ke career aur life ko poori
09:38tariki se change kar sakte hoon.
09:39Toh I think mujhe ek do company ki coincidence se sector pe koi point mark nahi hai.
09:47Mujhe lagta hai ki yeh sector bahuti strong hai aur bahuti achi tariki se aage bhi badega.
09:53Sahi entrepreneurs ko ispe sahi reasons ke liye aana padega.
09:56Yeh fata fat money bada karke bhaagne wala sector nahi hai.
10:00It's not fly by the night operators who will come in and build something and move on.
10:04Aapko focus karke apne students aur apne learners aur apne candidates ke life me aur iske learning
10:11journey pe ek outcome create karna padega.
10:13Agar aap sahi tariki se outcome create karte hoon, this sector will reward you in the process
10:18itself because there is enough pool for multiple entrepreneurs to come and build multiple large
10:24scale use cases which can enable and enhance the productivity of the country and will produce
10:30best kind of output from a talent perspective.
10:33Because last year when I told Shruti that India mein aur zyada koi natural resources
10:37hai nahi.
10:38Our biggest natural resource is our talent pool and therefore we have to work really
10:42hard and that gives entrepreneurs massive opportunities to build something unique, something
10:49at scale, something that can have impact to a very large section of society.
10:53Our national resource is our talent pool, that's a very nice kicker line Mayank.
10:59Thank you so much for coming on the show today.
11:04That was Mayank Kumar, co-founder of GRAD.
11:07Thank you viewers for watching us.
