00:00Following the successful opening event of the Women's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League,

00:05the league was filled with praise from female basketball players who played an important role.

00:11What are the comments of the pros and amateurs who played an important role here?

00:15Let's hear it from teammate Rafael Bandarell.

00:20Nikki Villacin is one of the heroes who served in the championship of the U.S.T. Growling Tigers

00:26during the U.W.A.B. season 86.

00:28Thanks to her clutch layup in the last seconds of the game,

00:32the U.S.T. was able to steal the title from the hands of the NU Lady Bulldogs.

00:36Nikki's high potential as a basketball player is very clear in that game.

00:42Nikki is now a graduate and for most female basketball players like her,

00:48the days of playing basketball will end in college.

00:52That's why the 5'3 Film Guard is so thankful that she now has a platform

00:59to enter the world of professional basketball,

01:03the Women's Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League or WMPBL.

01:22After U.A.P., because that's kind of where the career usually ends,

01:25it kind of just opens up more opportunities for jobs and then to continue the passion

01:30and reach the highest level that we can.

01:32Nikki played for Discovery Perlas on the opening day of WMPBL.

01:38Here, they faced the host team, U.S.T. Growling Tigers,

01:42in the first game of the Invitational Tournament of the League.

01:4619-year-old Karyl Sherba is a rookie in the U.S. field.

01:51But even though professional basketball is still far away,

01:55Karyl is happy that there is a league that is waiting for her after her collegiate basketball career.

02:02This pro league is a big thing for women who lost their career.

02:10After their U.A.P. career, there is no pro league like this.

02:15So thank you to Coach Heidi and Sir Manny for opening this league.

02:21Heidi Ong, a former national team player and head coach of the Growling Tigers,

02:26is leading the women's revolution that WMPBL is trying to make happen.

02:31Commissioner Heidi believes that WMPBL has a high chance of winning

02:37as long as all parts of this league will help.

02:41Maybe the whole ecosystem will help each other.

02:44The LGU, the government, the private sectors, the coaches, the players,

02:51we should really help each other because we need collaboration for everyone to elevate.

02:58And I think this is the platform that we all wanted for the talent of women's basketball to grow.

03:05For now, the Invitational Tournament of the League is still going on.

03:10This is just a taste of what the Filipino hoop fans can expect from the all-women's league.

03:16In June, the inaugural season of the league will officially open

03:20where the top professional women's teams in the country will compete.
