00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the most impactful deaths
00:13from One Piece.
00:24Number 10.
00:36The death of a monarch is a momentous event, even if that monarch is a mermaid.
00:42Queen Otohime has long championed for her fellow fishy citizens of Fishman Island to
00:47better integrate with humans.
00:49While collecting signatures to join the international community, Otohime's ballot box is set
00:54on fire and in the chaos, she's assassinated.
01:02However, even as she lays dying, the Queen forswears revenge and urges her tearful children
01:11not to hate whomever is responsible.
01:14Two of her sons being forced to sing and dance as Otohime dies to cheer up their sister Shirahoshi
01:20To prevent her abilities from running wild and killing them all only adds an extra layer
01:26of tragedy.
01:38Number 9.
01:39Pedro
01:49As Jaguar Mink may only travel with the Straw Hats to Whole Cake Island, but he comes in
01:55clutch for their first strike against an emperor.
01:58When the Thousand Sunny is trapped by Perispero's candy, Pedro stays behind to fight the Big
02:03Tongue Pirate.
02:04Although he's pinned down by Perispero, Pedro holds tight, reaffirming that the Straw
02:09Hats will bring about the dawn of the world, the change that he believes in.
02:24Lighting the bombs he has wrapped under his shirt, Pedro blows himself up, freeing the
02:29Straw Hats and letting them set sail.
02:32Pedro may not live to see the dawn, but his sacrifice is one beautiful sunset.
02:47Number 8.
02:48Belmere
02:58The family crops up a lot in One Piece, and Nami's adopted mom, Belmere, is an absolute
03:03boss.
03:04Despite being a poor ex-marine and having some friction with Nami, Belmere cares for
03:09the Straw Hats' future navigator and her sister, Nojiko.
03:13When Arlong and the Fishmen arrive at their village, demanding tribute money for both
03:18children and adults, or death, the family are in a tight spot.
03:23They only have enough money for either Belmere or her children.
03:26Although Belmere tries to fight at first, and has an option to deny her girls are hers,
03:31she refuses.
03:33Family is family.
03:50Belmere may die here, but her spunky, daring attitude lives on in Nami and her sister.
04:03Number 7.
04:04Brook and the Rumba Pirates
04:15Every Straw Hats backstory tends to feature at least one death, but only Brook actually
04:20dies in his.
04:21Before he was a living skeleton, Brook and his crew of music-loving pirates got stuck
04:26in the Florian Triangle.
04:28Poisoned in battle and with no hope of recovery or escape, the crew decides to play their
04:33favorite song, Binks' Sake, one last time.
04:36The scenes of the Rumba Pirates' end are interlaced with Brook playing for the Straw
04:41Hats in the present.
04:42Yet in the past, the Rumba Pirates dwindle until only Brook is left playing on the piano.
04:56Binks' Sake is a song for any occasion, but this occasion is unquestionably a sad
05:02one.
05:14Number 6.
05:15Kozuki Oden
05:28Legendary samurai Kozuki Oden meets his end in quite the epic fashion.
05:33He and his retainers are sentenced to execution by the corrupt Shogun Orochi and the Emperor
05:39Kaido.
05:40Orochi's twisted method of killing Oden involves boiling them alive, like Oden's
05:45namesake food.
05:46However, Oden manages to extract a promise to save his men should he survive an hour
05:58he sure does, all while holding his samurai over his head.
06:02His beastliness is solidified as everything he's done for the people of Wano is laid
06:07bare.
06:08Kaido may gun Oden down, but the hot-blooded samurai lived a life so incredible that we
06:13share his final smile, even if it's through tears.
06:30Number 5.
06:31Dr. Hiroluke
06:37A fraud of a doctor he may be, but Dr. Hiroluke is one hell of a man.
06:42Despite lacking medical know-how, Hiroluke does all he can to heal his home country of
06:47Drum Kingdom, while also raising Chopper like a son.
06:51Dying of disease, Hiroluke eats a poison mushroom Chopper brings him after seeing how much he
06:56went through to get it.
06:58Hiroluke even rushes into the trap set by the corrupt king to find any remaining doctors,
07:03but he isn't sad, he's just glad no one got sick.
07:13As he succumbs to the poison, Hiroluke decides to cut his life short so Chopper isn't the
07:18one who kills him.
07:20A man only dies when he's forgotten, and Hiroluke's legacy is great indeed.
07:37Number 4.
07:38Corazon
07:46His brother Doflamingo is a monster, and Corazon is a kind-hearted man.
07:51Corazon does everything in his power to help a young Trafalgar Law heal from his amber
07:56lead poisoning.
07:57When Doflamingo finally catches up with them, Corazon is beaten and bloodied, with Law hiding
08:02silently in a chest behind him.
08:04Although his brother kills him, Corazon is able to fool Doflamingo and keep Law hidden.
08:20His depth of care and generosity have a deep impact on not only Law, but viewers as well.
08:26Law certainly isn't the only one crying.
08:38Number 3.
08:39Gold Roger
08:40Wealth, fame, power, the Pirate King Gold Roger had all of these and more.
08:51However, One Piece begins with the execution of Goldy Roger.
09:04Already dying from disease, Roger gives himself up, but he doesn't go quietly.
09:09His death begins both the series and the golden age of piracy, as his last words about the
09:14One Piece sends every would-be pirate in search of the fabled treasure.
09:18That's including a certain young rubber man, of course.
09:22While his death doesn't hit as hard emotionally, the first time anyway, there's no denying
09:26the impact Roger's death had on his world and ours.
09:41Number 2.
09:42Whitebeard
09:43Speaking of veteran pirates, Roger's greatest rival, Edward Newgate, meets quite the incredible
09:59end himself.
10:00After sustaining many injuries during the Summit War, Whitebeard finally dies after
10:04being shot by his former crewman, Blackbeard, and his new crew.
10:09But he doesn't die right away.
10:11Whitebeard uses his final words to belt out a confirmation to the entire world that the
10:16One Piece does really exist, reigniting the passion of pirates everywhere.
10:31And when he finally does die, Whitebeard does so not only while standing, but also without
10:36a single wound on his back.
10:38All Whitebeard ever wanted in life was a family.
10:42Through his crew, he achieved his dream, and in death, Whitebeard became even more of a
10:47legend than he already was.
11:16Number 1.
11:17Portgas D. Ace
11:25This young pirate was always destined for an epic conclusion.
11:28They run in his family.
11:30Roger's son, and Whitebeard's adopted one, and Luffy's foster brother, Ace is at the
11:35centre of the Summit War.
11:37Despite his family and fellow pirates doing everything they can to save him from execution,
11:42Ace does ultimately die anyway.
11:45Unwilling to stomach insults to Whitebeard, Ace faces Admiral Akinu in battle.
11:50Although he's outmatched in the fight, Ace's undoing occurs when Akinu takes aim at Luffy,
11:55causing Ace to jump in the way.
12:05The death of Ace left not only Luffy shook, it also rocked the One Piece community.
12:10His tragic end is a pivotal one in the story, and one that never fails to make us cry.
12:23Is there a One Piece death we forgot?
