00:00The target is to give a free vaccine against HPV to 1 million female students in the country.
00:06HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer in the country according to the World Health Organization.
00:12Watch Ian Cruz.
00:18The Department of Health itself said that it is expensive to give a vaccine against HPV or Human Papilloma Virus.
00:25That's Php 4,000 per dose according to the DOH or Php 8,000 including the second dose after 6 months.
00:34How important is it to stop the effect of HPV?
00:39The Human Papilloma Virus is a type of sexually transmitted infection
00:44that occurs in skin-to-skin contact and interaction.
00:48Some cases of HPV can be treated even without symptoms.
00:53But there are cases that lead to cancer.
00:58According to the World Health Organization in 2019,
01:01HPV caused 620,000 females and 70,000 males.
01:09According to the WHO, HPV is 95% of cervical cancer cases.
01:18This is the third type of cancer that often affects females here in the Philippines.
01:248,549 Filipinos were affected by cervical cancer
01:29based on the latest report of the International Agency for Research of the WHO.
01:34Almost half of them died in 2022.
01:39Among those who died from cervical cancer,
01:41Chahin and 27-year-old cousin of Maricel died a few years ago.
01:47I feel sorry for my cousin. She has a child.
01:51That's why Maricel is supported to get vaccinated against HPV.
01:57The DOH's target is to inject HPV vaccines while she is still young.
02:03Before she becomes sexually active, she should be vaccinated.
02:07And we estimate that the best age for that is around 9 years old.
02:11It doesn't mean that she can't get vaccinated later in life.
02:14There are some people who can get vaccinated.
02:15But for preventive measures, the best age is at that age.
02:19This is free and voluntary for those who want to get vaccinated.
02:23It can be done in schools.
02:25The President appointed me for 2025.
02:27For 2025, we can vaccinate all Filipino girls.
02:31And the effect of this is that cervical cancer will disappear.
02:34As of January 6, more than half a million female grade 4 students
02:39were given the first dose of HPV vaccine in the school-based immunization program.
02:46The target of the program is the students in private schools.
02:51Women have cervical cancer.
02:53That's why they are the target to be given the HPV vaccine.
02:57But according to the DOH, even adults are also looking to be given the vaccine.
03:03If a man is given this vaccine, he won't be infected by the human papilloma virus or HPV.
03:11If he won't be infected by HPV, he won't be able to pass this virus to his future wife or partner.
03:21And he won't have cervical cancer.
03:23In terms of side effects,
03:26There will be a slight itchiness, there will be a slight rash.
03:32But it won't last long.
03:34Because if you are given ice or cold compress, it will also disappear.
03:39There are other possible side effects that are very minor and very mild.
03:43Some patients will get a fever.
03:45But beyond that, we won't have any serious side effects when it comes to this vaccine.
03:52For GMA Integrated News, I am Ian Cruz, your witness.
