Gerry Adams on 'resistance' and exploiting a loophole in the law during the Troubles (filmed in 2023)
Transcript
00:00There was still a culture of resistance, and the culture of resistance was much bigger than the IRA,
00:07and was much bigger than Republicans.
00:10It was women intervening when some young person was being harassed in the street.
00:16It was people refusing to give their names and addresses.
00:21It was people learning what the law was.
00:24I remember one particular little episode that involved Martin.
00:31If you were stopped at a roadblock, the soldier would say to you,
00:35will you put your vehicle into the side of the road?
00:38So we discovered that he didn't have the authority to do that.
00:43He only had the authority to stop you.
00:45He didn't have the authority to order you to put your vehicle into the side of the road.
00:49So at different times, I remember Martin and I were going to General Abraham,
00:53and he handed the Brit the keys, and the German walked off,
00:57and left the car in the middle of the road.
