Back in 2024, Healthline reported that a new survey found that 57% of millennial and Gen-Z Tiktok users reported being influenced by or frequently adopting nutrition trends they learned about on the app. Yet, it was found that only about 2% of these trends are accurate, compared to public health and nutrition guidelines. With this spread of potentially misinformation, how is that affecting diets?

00:0017% of us are on a diet at any one given time. Evidence has shown that 60% of dieties regain
00:11the weight and more that they lost on the diet. So that's why it's so important that
00:17things are sustainable and evidence-based. We eat for many different reasons. We eat
00:21to sustain our bodies, we eat for social occasion as well. But you're right, sometimes that
00:26that can go a little bit out of kilter. It's really important that we eat that balanced
00:32diet that is there for that long-term, that sustainable change, that sustainable diet.
00:37And going back to basics as to what the human body actually needs, so it's those macronutrients
00:42making sure that we eat a balanced diet. There's been an explosion of ultra-processed foods
00:48over the last few decades. And as I've said, that uniquely powerful fat, sugar, carbohydrate
00:54content that is not sustainable over the long-term. That is exploding these obesity
00:59rates. Now, obesity rates end of last year has recently shown evidence of stabilising,
01:05of reaching a plateau. Back in 2024, Healthline reported that a new survey found that 57%
01:11of millennial and Gen Z TikTok users reported being influenced by or frequently adopting
01:16nutrition trends they learnt about on the app. Yet it was found that only about 2% of
01:21these trends are accurate compared to public health and nutrition guidelines. With this
01:26spread of potential misinformation, how is that affecting diets?
01:30Social media is a monumentally powerful industry. And there's a lot of what I would call cognitive
01:36dissonance out there. We've got the body positivity movement, which is so important, but we've
01:41also got the fashion industry with often unachievable images. It's very interesting. So the research
01:47shows that 90% of women feel some aspect of negative body image. So absolutely, it's really
01:54important to get that support.
