WA Police have commenced an investigation into a horror crash on a major Perth highway that killed four people. Dashcam footage obtained from the driver's vehicle has been identified as key evidence in understanding how this crash occurred.

00:00It was just after half past three local time in Perth yesterday morning when this major
00:07crash occurred between a four-wheel drive and a taxi.
00:10They collided head on on Leach Highway in Cloverdale near Perth's airport.
00:16Now police confirmed that four people died at the scene who were all West Australians.
00:20Police say this four-wheel drive, the driver was driving on the wrong lane of Leach Highway
00:25when it collided head on with the taxi.
00:28The driver of that four-wheel drive is yet to be formally identified, however, died at
00:33the scene.
00:34A 58-year-old taxi driver also died at the scene.
00:38Police also confirmed there were two female passengers in the taxi, 156 and 181.
00:44They were mother and daughter and they were in the back of the taxi and they also died
00:48at the scene.
00:49There were pictures shared on social media quite confronting images of this crash.
00:55The four-wheel drive, once it hit the taxi, it was completely engulfed in flames and emergency
01:00services had to quickly arrive at the scene.
01:02Major crash investigators were also at the scene in the morning picking up the debris
01:06and towing away those two cars.
01:09Now police gave a major update in the afternoon about this investigation.
01:13They said they were surprised they were able to locate dash cam footage inside the four-wheel
01:18drive, the one that was engulfed in flames at the scene.
01:22Now there were only some files on that dash cam footage but they were able to view it
01:26and they said there is evidence now to suggest that the driver had been driving erratically
01:31and over the speed limit throughout some suburbs and had been driving on the wrong side of
01:35the road for quite some time before it hit the taxi, however, it had cut out before that
01:40moment of impact, so that was quite significant evidence and they say they'll be using that
01:45to determine what the reason was for this incident in Perth.
01:50WA's road toll in 2024 was the highest it has been since 2016 with 186 people dead,
01:57so this was not the start of the year that people were really after.
