00:00The Dakar Classic is a race like no other, with its own vehicles and own specific rules.
00:20The Dakar Classic is a rally raid, vintage vehicle version and regularity version.
00:29The sporting aspect has three main elements, the regularity tests, the navigation tests
00:34and the dune tests, where we're going to see the capacity of crossing the dunes.
00:49On the Dakar Classic, each crew has a paper roadbook and a digital roadbook, which has
00:53the same things than on the paper, but with additional information based on the position
00:58of the vehicle, and that will help, especially when you do regularity.
01:03As soon as you move away from the track, you will be signalled.
01:06Why did we do that?
01:08Because the interest of regularity isn't to lose yourself, for that we have navigation
01:12tests.
01:13That's when we check and we get rid of that help.
01:16Once they're on track, they will have to follow average speed, that will vary as the day goes
01:20by.
01:23It will evolve based on the type of terrain, if it's sinuous and tricky, we'll bring the
01:27average down, and if it's easily drivable, we'll make it faster.
01:36That's what's interesting, to add regularity to the Dakar, because Rally Raid has endless
01:40possibilities of problems on the stage.
01:43It's part of the game, and that means time loss.
01:47And that's why we don't design stages of 400km of regularity, because we know that breaking
01:52apart means it's almost over for the crew.
01:54We segment our regularity tests.
02:00And if there's a big issue, and the competitor loses time, he'll be able to reset the counters
02:05for the next test.
02:13How do you win?
02:14On the modern Dakar, it's based on time.
02:16The lowest time I have, the better I am.
02:18On the classic, it's points, but the principle is the same.
02:20The less points I have, the better I am.
02:23So it's based on penalties.
02:24The further behind or ahead of the schedule I am, on the ideal time, the more I get penalty
02:30points.
02:31And in navigation, the more I miss a waypoint and get the direction wrong, the more I get
02:36penalty points.
02:38And at this big desert game, the leader remains Carlos Santaolalia, a master of regularity
02:43and navigation.
