00:00Keir Starmer took office in early July. He spoke to President Xi Jinping at the end of August
00:07and they met in November at the Rio summit and they agreed that the various dialogues between
00:14the two countries which had been suspended under the Tories should be resumed and the visit by the
00:20Chancellor of the Exchequer, long overdue, nearly six years since the last economic and financial
00:27dialogue between Britain and China is the first step on that journey. It's by no means the last
00:33step but it's a very important and significant move forward. Both countries are looking for
00:40growth. Both countries are looking for investment. Both countries have complementary economies.
00:47Britain can't get to net zero without Chinese help. Britain's expertise in financial services,
00:53in pensions, in investment management, in insurance is all of huge benefit to China
00:59as well as in the range of consumer goods that Chinese consumers seem to like to buy. So there's
01:05a lot to discuss, a lot to do and it's difficult to overstate the importance of this visit.
