00:00Alola is home to thousands of ancient inscriptions.
00:10We meet those who study them and try and uncover the mysteries of life from civilizations long
00:15past.
00:16Here, I'm the director of the ICAP project, and the goal of that project is to study the
00:22many, many inscriptions that are found within the Alola county.
00:28I am an epigraphist, a specialist of Nabataean and Thamudic inscriptions.
00:34Alola is one of the richest regions of the kingdom with ancient inscriptions.
00:44I think one of the reasons why Alola is so rich in historical artifacts in general is
00:50because it's a place of permanent water, right on the incense trade route that connected
00:56the south of the peninsula to the rest of the Mediterranean world and Mesopotamia.
01:04It's a geological environment.
01:07We are here in a sandstone area, and the sandstone rock is extremely interesting for the production
01:15of inscriptions.
01:16It's extremely easy to carve anything on sandstone formation.
01:22When we go out to survey, we usually have a GPS with us to log where we are exactly
01:29so that we can map all the inscriptions that we find.
01:32We mostly take a lot of pictures so that we will be able to take them home and continue
01:36to study them at home.
01:39Sometimes those inscriptions tell us what the authors were doing while they were carving
01:46the inscriptions.
01:47So, draw the connection between two different sites where you can find the same persons,
01:53you know, and to see the different places that a single person could have visited 2,000
01:59years ago.
