Men’s doubles shuttlers Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi continued their fine run in the Malaysia Open by smashing into the quarter-finals.

After their 23-21, 16-21, 21-18 second round win over South Korea’s 2023 world champion Kang Min-hyuk and his new partner Jin Yong on Jan 9, the Malaysians said modestly: “We're not the fifth seed (favourite pairs) to win (after the early round exit for the top four pairs). But we'll try our best. All 32 pairs are strong, except for us.”

00:00I think it was a tight match.
00:22In the second set, they were focused and didn't give any easy points.
00:26Even though we were leading by 6-1, they kept chasing us.
00:30There was a point where we really wanted to score, but we made a mistake.
00:35What were their strengths?
00:36Maybe it was hard for you guys to pass the ball to them since it was your first pair?
00:41Yeah, it was their first pair.
00:44They were very defensive.
00:46Their defense was solid.
00:48So it wasn't easy for us to pass the ball to them.
00:53So we had to be more patient.
00:55Kang is an experienced ball champion.
00:58Jin Yong also came up very fast.
01:00He did well.
01:02Do you think you are quite satisfied?
01:04Because it is actually a strong pair, even though it was a scratch pair.
01:08Yeah, I think it doesn't matter if it's Korea or China.
01:13Even though it was a scratch pair, it was a good match.
01:17It was a strong pair.
01:20We didn't think too much about the matchup.
01:25We just did our best.
01:27So it's two strong wins in two matches.
01:32Is it giving you a lot of confidence?
01:34Yeah, of course.
01:35Looking at a good run in this tournament?
01:37Yeah, of course.
01:38But we still cannot take this advantage as we are very comfortable.
01:42So we still have to...
01:44By the way, rest first today.
01:46Game finished.
01:47Prepare again tomorrow.
01:48Last year, we didn't have a good result.
01:51And today, we won the second round.
01:54I think we have to take tomorrow's match as our first round.
01:58Don't feel like we are in the semi-finals or quarter-finals.
02:01We have to feel proud.
02:03You look a little tired after the match.
02:06Maybe you can...
02:07I'm already 32 years old.
02:11So I have to rest well.
02:13I have to do some stretching and cooling down.
02:17Did you feel anything when you fell?
02:20No.
02:22You said you were in the quarter-finals four times in a row.
02:25Do you want to be in the semi-finals again?
02:28Of course, we want to be in the semi-finals.
02:31We want to be in the finals.
02:33But like I said, step by step.
02:35Focus at every point, every game.
02:37But your relaxed approach is working for this tournament?
02:42Not taking any pressure or anything?
02:44Yeah, I think it's working.
02:46I think we can play more freely.
02:51I can say more freely.
02:53More focused.
02:55Usually, the top four seats in this tournament have lost already.
02:58Do you think this is an opportunity for you guys from Malaysia to open up?
03:03Yes, but I'm not the fifth seat.
03:08We will try our best.
03:10Or the top 31.
