00:00It feels like you've just been on an incredible, like, five-year streak.
00:03Started with Ma Rainey, you know,
00:06Russian, coming up to Sing Sing.
00:08What does this stage of your career feel like for you?
00:10It feels like a real golden chapter, to be honest.
00:13You know, I've been working for 34 years.
00:15You know, when you're working in the theater and you're working in,
00:18you know, small professional theaters and small films,
00:20I think I've never sort of aspired to be on these carpets or anything.
00:24Really, I just put one foot in front of the other.
00:26And so all of this is like icing on the cake.
00:29It's the cherry on top.
00:30It's many things I'm in awe of that I'd never imagined.
00:33But I'm very grateful for the journey.
00:35And now that I'm here, I want to see how I can move the needle
00:37and make a difference and represent black men in a really unique way
00:42and tell stories that are diverse about our experience
00:45as a writer, director, producer and actor.
00:48I mean, whatever I can do.
00:49And I feel like if I help move the needle in our culture,
00:52I'm doing something really well.
00:53And I know that my mother and my father and my ancestors
00:55will be proud of me.
00:57So I want to talk about with Sing Sing, just having this unique way
01:00they put this film together.
01:02You know, do you see that working with more black projects to kind of give?
01:06I think it will work with any project, because I think that there's
01:08something about making sure that everyone feels valued in their stories.
01:12And you really are part of equity.
01:14You don't just give it away, but you're a part of it in every single way.
01:17So there feels like we're starting a movement in some ways.
01:20People are inquiring about it over and over again and think it's useful
01:24to make sure we all feel valued.
01:25We all feel heard. We all feel respected.
