00:00New York City is known for its bustling sidewalks and public transportation.
00:03However, the Big Apple is now trying to do something about its congested roadways.
00:08Manhattan has now officially rolled out a new congestion charge for many parts of the island,
00:12charging drivers who have decided to circumvent other forms of transport.
00:16The new program has been rolled out in a zone just south of the famed Central Park.
00:20It includes some of the city's most iconic tourist destinations,
00:24including the Empire State Building and Times Square.
00:26However, it also includes areas all the way down to Wall Street,
00:29on the southernmost tip of the island.
00:31So how are they keeping track?
00:33Well, with these.
00:34Some 400 lanes of traffic are currently being monitored by over 1,400 cameras.
00:39That includes tagging and tracking vehicles from 110 detection points,
00:43which are flagged with over 800 signs.
00:45Many drivers are unhappy at the upwards of $9 a day charge.
00:49However, those who have initiated the scheme say it will raise billions
00:52in support of New York's aging public transportation.
00:55What's more, large trucks and tourist buses will pay even more, up to $21.60 a day.
01:00This all comes after New York City was named the world's most congested urban area
01:04two years running by traffic firm INRIX.
