00:00Generally, nice, nice kid, nice person.
00:07She'd had problems from early childhood
00:10and there was never guidance in her life.
00:15Lynette White was only 20 years old.
00:18She'd had a difficult upbringing
00:20and was working as a prostitute in the Docks area of Cardiff.
00:30It's easy to label people without actually knowing them.
00:35You don't know what has coerced them into doing things.
00:38You don't know anything about their life.
00:41She was a young girl who was brutally murdered.
00:49The investigation into Lynette White's murder
00:52was to be tainted by accusations of racism and corruption.
00:56Witnesses were bullied by police
00:59and a false confession led to one of the worst miscarriages of justice
01:03in British legal history.
01:05A suspect with blood-stained clothes, who was seen near the flat, was white,
01:10but all the men the police arrested were black.
01:14They would become known by campaigners as the Cardiff Five.
01:22You know, when they're telling you something like this
01:25you know, a girl had been stabbed 50 to 70 times,
01:30you know, don't put this on me.
01:32But they did, that's what they wanted to do.
01:34There was nothing we could do.
01:36There wasn't a shred of evidence
01:39connecting, forensically, these people to the murder.
01:44Something had gone wrong.
01:46With their convictions overturned,
01:48the failure to catch the real killer
01:51was a stain on South Wales Police
01:54and left a shadow hanging over the community.
01:58In 1999, 11 years after Lynette's murder,
02:02a fresh team of detectives from the force
02:05launched a last-ditch attempt to find the real killer.
02:10And that's where we turned to what we saw as being the best in the field,
02:13Angela Gallop.
02:15How can you help us?
02:17And the work that Angela Gallop and her team would do
02:20to help solve Lynette's murder
02:22was to change the way forensic science is used
02:25to crack seemingly unsolvable crimes.
02:32You learn something new in every case,
02:34but my goodness, we learned a lot from this particular one.
02:47I'll never forget the first time
02:49I walked into a forensic science lab.
02:52I noticed that there was this orangey-red staining
02:55inside a fume cupboard
02:57and then on the side wall and bench next to it.
