00:00We will be able to watch Reggie Ramirez live in the studio.
00:04He is a decorated powerlifter who has been competing internationally for a long time.
00:09Good afternoon, Coach Reggie.
00:11Good afternoon, Coach.
00:12Thank you for having me.
00:14Okay, Coach. Let's start this interview.
00:18Let's give the viewers a background.
00:22When did you start and how did you discover powerlifting?
00:27I started in 2011.
00:29Actually, I started powerlifting because of my family.
00:35Before me, my auntie already started.
00:39She is also very known.
00:41She is also a world champion.
00:42Our coach is the same.
00:44My uncle is her husband.
00:46So, that's where I discovered powerlifting.
00:50She is a family legacy, Coach.
00:52Yes, even my sisters are national champions.
00:56That's great. It's a family sport.
00:59All of you are giving tips regarding powerlifting.
01:03I'm sure a lot of our viewers are confused.
01:07What is the difference between powerlifting and weightlifting?
01:12The difference is the type of weight.
01:15As you can see in weightlifting, most people are more familiar with weightlifting.
01:21You can always see it on TV.
01:23Those are the overhead lifts.
01:25They have clean and jerk and snatch.
01:28In powerlifting, we have three lifts.
01:31Squat, bench press, and deadlift.
01:34They have different weights.
01:36But for the people who are watching now,
01:39it's more like a brother and sister sport.
01:43It's like having a beach volleyball and an indoor volleyball.
01:47That's how similar they are.
01:49It's just that they're played differently.
01:51But the equipment is nearly exactly the same.
01:55It's just that the specs are different.
01:57But it's still barbells and plates.
02:00So you can say, Coach, that if you know one, it's easy to transition to the other.
02:04Not necessarily.
02:06Not necessarily because their skill level is different.
02:10But there's an easy way.
02:14If you're a weightlifter,
02:16because the skill level of weightlifting is really high,
02:19flexibility, agility, everything,
02:23it's easy to transition.
02:25Especially if your body can't take it
02:27because weightlifting is more aggressive when it comes to speed.
02:31Everything happens so fast.
02:34There's a certain range of age that your body can handle.
02:37But in powerlifting, you can transition from weightlifting to powerlifting
02:41because we even have lifters who are up to 90 years old.
02:46So it's a sport for all ages.
02:50But if we switch it from powerlifting to weightlifting,
02:53it also depends on the age.
02:55Because in powerlifting,
02:58you really need to have a rigid body
03:01because you're under so much weight.
03:03Powerlifters lift heavier than weightlifters.
03:09You mentioned, Coach, that weightlifters lift heavier.
03:14And I was just curious,
03:16I told Ralph earlier,
03:18when I saw Coach again,
03:20I said, Coach,
03:22it's not typical for you to think that
03:24your body is big for powerlifting,
03:26super fit, and very toned.
03:28Coach's body type is not bulky.
03:33So is there a particular diet for powerlifting
03:37that you need to follow
03:39in order to maintain that?
03:41And how do you actually gain your strength?
03:43What is your training routine?
03:45Actually, it's quite similar to all sports.
03:47We also have weight classes.
03:49So as for us,
03:51for me, as you see, I'm small
03:53because I have a weight class that I keep up.
03:56There are people my height.
03:57I'm only 59 kilos.
03:59But there are people my height
04:00that are weighing up to 90 kilos.
04:02So they're really wider
04:04because their weight classes are different.
04:06And then you can also see other weight classes.
04:10Like in my team, they are 120 plus kilos.
04:15That's why their looks are different.
04:17But one thing is for sure
04:19is that most of the people
04:21who really lift for a certain time
04:23are really big guys.
04:25Big or small.
04:26And then, as for the diet,
04:28it's similar to all sports
04:30that you have to have that energy
04:32and then food to recover properly.
04:35And then also,
04:37about weight cutting or keeping in that weight,
04:39you just have to manage by how much you eat.
04:42That's all.
04:43So there's really a diet management.
04:46Coach, I'll just follow up on my partner's question.
04:49About your diet,
04:51you said it's similar to all sports,
04:55but just give us an example.
04:57For example, later,
04:58what does your dinner look like later?
05:00Because boxers are really less carbohydrates
05:03coming into a game.
05:05Yeah, there's a,
05:07as you mentioned,
05:09boxing and other sports.
05:12There's a certain time
05:15or period of your training
05:17where carbs are prohibited,
05:19too much this, too much that.
05:21Even water you have to cut out
05:23depends on how close you are to the competition
05:25and what weight you need.
05:27Either you have to gain or you have to lose weight.
05:29So later,
05:31I have a competition coming,
05:33but still in August.
05:35Right now, what I need is the energy
05:37to actually survive in training.
05:40Not so critical yet
05:42with how much I weigh.
05:44So more of like how much my body can recover
05:47and then exert energy.
05:49So later, it's going to be a lot of carbs
05:51and then protein and then good fats then.
05:53So those are my micros.
05:55Also, you have to deal with your micronutrients,
05:57your vitamins and minerals.
05:59You have to be just complete.
06:01But in a way of by how much you eat,
06:04you just need to be full
06:05and then you cover all the things
06:07that your body needs to exert
06:09and also to recover.
06:25But of course, you are now holding
06:27this world record
06:29in the World Open Equipped Championships 2024.
06:32Can you tell us your experience
06:34in this competition?
06:36Well, first of all, the preparation.
06:39It was all about the preparation.
06:41The people with me in my training and recovery
06:45was a whole another level.
06:49Besides, my coach always checks up on me.
06:53I also have now my recovery team.
06:57They always help when I feel pain
07:00in any part of my body,
07:02my tightness that you can't properly execute
07:05the exercises.
07:06They are there to actually fix me.
07:08So yeah, I need my PT.
07:11So we also have PT.
07:13And then, in terms of food,
07:16my partner is always supporting me with the food.
07:18For example,
07:19this is already available,
07:20this is already available.
07:21Will you want to take this one?
07:23There's a better option.
07:24This one.
07:25So always been helping me also.
07:26And then my training partners.
07:28So there, in the gym.
07:30Very supportive.
07:31The morale is very high.
07:33And then, going forward,
07:35the feeling is that
07:37when I got that world record,
07:40I was just so happy that it all paid off.
07:44The feeling of lifting at that moment
07:46was just miniscule.
07:48I enjoyed it.
07:49I was happy.
07:50I was smiling all the way.
07:52But it was more of like,
07:55I don't want to disappoint the people
07:56who were always there for me.
07:58I took it quite personally
08:00that I want to take that record.
08:02Speaking of that though,
08:03besides the physical conditioning,
08:07like what you mentioned,
08:09there is also mental conditioning.
08:11Because there's pressure.
08:13Yeah, totally.
08:14Totally.
08:15I have this one.
08:16I just have to say this,
08:17but I have this.
08:18He's like a client in our place.
08:20Our name is Space.
08:21And he's like a client.
08:23He's a client there.
08:24And it all started with,
08:26we were just talking about the universe
08:28and all this.
08:30The possibilities.
08:32And then it all came to,
08:35he came to be quite of my sports psychiatrist
08:39because he made me imagine myself winning.
08:42So you won now.
08:43We had this talk.
08:44You won now.
08:45Now get back.
08:47Go back.
08:48What did you do to win this one?
08:51So it made me think,
08:54to imagine winning.
08:56And then what did I do
08:57to win this one?
08:58And he also made me think
09:00that it was also,
09:03it made me think the opposite,
09:05that I lost.
09:06And then why did I lose?
09:08So what happened?
09:10What did I do?
09:11So procrastinating,
09:12all those kinds.
09:13I imagined myself doing that one,
09:14not eating the right kind of food.
09:16So it was all in my head.
09:19Mentally, that was the pressure.
09:21And it wasn't happening yet.
09:23It was like three months out of competition.
09:25I was already imagining
09:27and accepting the result.
09:28If I do this or I don't do that,
09:30that's it.
09:31I thank that guy.
09:33Power of the mind.
09:34The power of manifestation.
09:36So Coach reversed engineered
09:38the possibilities that he saw.
09:41And Coach visualized the two pathways.
09:45But Coach, you also teach,
09:47so do you also apply these tricks
09:50to your students?
09:52Right now,
09:55I have new ones
09:57and then I have like,
09:59the lifters are already seasoned.
10:01Seasoned ones, yeah.
10:03Of course,
10:05we have this soft talk
10:07and we also have the hard talk.
10:09And then for the new ones,
10:11it's more of like preventing them
10:13to do mistakes that would
10:15hinder their career,
10:16or their lifting injuries
10:18and stuff like that.
10:19And also, even with my friends,
10:21I have this kind of talk.
10:22Whatever you want to achieve in life.
10:24So I shared that one,
10:25that you have to put yourself there,
10:27that you already got it
10:28or you've lost it.
10:30So what are you going to do?
10:31So yeah,
10:32it's part of my life
10:34and with all the people around me.
10:36Coach,
10:38when you compete
10:40at this high level,
10:42a lot of people say that
10:44in terms of physicality,
10:45it's almost equal.
10:46So I'm very fascinated
10:48with your mental preparation.
10:51So do you think that
10:53at this level of competition,
10:55it all boils down to mentality?
10:57Because in terms of physicality,
10:59almost everything is there.
11:01There's everything.
11:03I wouldn't say that
11:05when you think this way,
11:07it's going to happen.
11:09It's not really like that.
11:11You have to back it up with
11:13proper preparation.
11:15You have to eat well,
11:16you have to train as hard as you can,
11:18but still you have to train so smart,
11:20smartly because
11:22it only takes a little bit of
11:24weight shift,
11:26wrong decisions,
11:28and it could end right here, right now.
11:30This year, you're not competing at all.
11:32But,
11:34yeah,
11:36if you actually know that
11:38you've prepared enough,
11:40there's no way that you're not going to believe
11:42that you can get this one.
11:44And that's what I accepted right there.
11:46I'm not going to fail.
11:48I'm not going to lose this one.
11:50It doesn't matter what.
11:52No way.
11:54So, definitely, it's a balance.
11:56It's a balance because they support each other.
11:58If you lack this part,
12:00you could never say,
12:02I can. That's just lying to yourself.
12:04You have to be there
12:06at all aspects.
12:08So, physical preparation
12:10plus mental preparation
12:12is the key to success, right?
12:14Yeah.
12:16Another fun fact.
12:18Aside from powerlifting,
12:20there are hidden talents.
12:22I feel like our teammates
12:24won't be able to guess this.
12:26It's so far.
12:28Even for me, when I read it.
12:30Okay, share with us,
12:32Coach Reggie,
12:34what are the fun facts
12:36that will surprise our teammates
12:38when they find out
12:40your background.
12:42My background is,
12:44actually,
12:46I wouldn't start powerlifting.
12:48I wouldn't be able to start powerlifting
12:50if I didn't do ballet.
12:52Because in ballet,
12:54men are supposed to be
12:56like women.
12:58We have to make them look graceful,
13:00lift them up like it's air,
13:02and we have to look like it's nothing.
13:04But the reality is,
13:06that's so difficult because you can't just drop them down.
13:08They have to land like a feather.
13:10So, I was a small guy,
13:1214 years old,
13:14and I still looked like 10.
13:16I don't know, my height just
13:18stagnated until I was 14.
13:20That's the only time I grew.
13:22But anyway,
13:24my uncle said,
13:26my coach said,
13:28for you to be able to jump higher,
13:30for the boys, individually,
13:32you have to jump and then turn a lot.
13:34You can't turn a lot.
13:36You can't do doubles or triples if your jump is so short.
13:38So, he said,
13:40okay, you have to get your legs stronger.
13:42And it all started from there.
13:44And then, I just shifted
13:46to powerlifting
13:48as years went.
13:50Because he just
13:52saw that I was a fast learner.
13:54And then,
13:56I thank my
13:58being a fast learner
14:00or the talent that I have,
14:02that I have got all the techniques so fast.
14:04It's not because of the ballet.
14:06It's so point.
14:08If they say that you have
14:10to face left and this way,
14:12everyone has to face left and this way.
14:14There's no such thing as my own style.
14:16No, it's going to be so point
14:18that the teacher must
14:20see everyone to be that way.
14:22So, I learned it that way,
14:24that hard. So, powerlifting,
14:26transitioning there was,
14:28I was so happy because everything went so easy.
14:30Yeah, and then I have the best
14:32coach also. So, that's the trivia.
14:34It's like worlds apart.
14:36Ballet, of course, if you envision
14:38ballet, it's very graceful.
14:40When you say powerlifting, very manly,
14:42very strong. But is there
14:44a similarity? That's the trick.
14:46That's the trick of all the ballet
14:48dancers out there.
14:50They make you look like
14:52it's so easy.
14:54They make you look like they're floating
14:56and graceful and they are soft.
14:58But it takes a lot of power
15:00to make or to
15:02get that form steady
15:04or to stay in that certain position.
15:06It takes a lot of power. Look,
15:08all of them, so muscular.
15:10The boys have huge legs
15:12and the girls are so lean.
15:14It takes a lot
15:16of power. So, I would say that
15:18the only difference in
15:20powerlifting and the ballet
15:22is that the sports
15:24itself. But the skill set
15:26is as
15:28needed.
15:30So, you wouldn't
15:32feel, I never felt that
15:34it's a girly
15:36kind of thing, right? Because you're dancing
15:38and doing this all
15:40pirouette and then releves.
15:42And I got tights.
15:44Boys, especially
15:46in our country, wouldn't wear
15:48any fitting kind of thing because it looks
15:50revealing and it's not manly.
15:52But ballet
15:54can't be any less manly
15:56than any other sport.
15:58It came from there. It takes a lot of
16:00you to even
16:02stay there for hours and
16:04hours of training and lifting the girls.
16:06It takes a lot of being
16:08a man, really. So, hard sport.
16:10Coach's partner is right
16:12because ballet
16:14is also a sport and you exert
16:16physical energy. But
16:18what makes it hard is
16:20you have to look graceful.
16:22In other sports, no matter what you look like,
16:24as long as you perform that task,
16:26it's okay. But in ballet,
16:28no matter what performance,
16:30you need a lot of
16:32power to maintain that form.
16:34So, when you lift
16:36the girls, it takes a lot of
16:38power. But aside from ballet,
16:40you have another sport.
16:42Yeah, I mentioned
16:46Arnis. I also did Arnis
16:48because Arnis, at the same time,
16:50is a very explosive sport.
16:52So, it helped me
16:54a lot under pressure.
16:56Even though when someone's trying
16:58to hit your head off
17:00in Arnis, you have to remain
17:02focused and then
17:04keep calm. So, I think
17:06being a martial
17:08artist makes
17:10you to remain
17:12steady at the make it or break it moment.
17:16Okay, Coach. So, let's go back to
17:18powerlifting.
17:20We know that you're preparing
17:22for the upcoming World Games
17:24in China in August.
17:26Can you just share with us
17:28how did you prepare?
17:30Everything I got.
17:32Food, training,
17:34and still the same people with me.
17:36And the maturity
17:38that I got from that World Championship
17:40to be
17:42to have less mistakes
17:44because I learned a lot
17:46from that mistake. The winning is
17:48the winning is just
17:50the happy times. But the things
17:52that I failed to do.
17:54Coach, when you say training,
17:56can you just give us specifics?
17:58For example,
18:00what does your session look like?
18:02It looks like
18:04for example, the day one is
18:06squat day. And then you have to do some accessories
18:08to strengthen the squat.
18:10And then also to cover some
18:12other muscles that supports the whole thing.
18:14The whole lifting itself.
18:16And then, on the bench,
18:18bench day, you just
18:20have to do a lot of back work,
18:22triceps, those kind of things. And in the deadlift,
18:24you just have to put
18:26a lot of technique work because
18:28the carryover of the squat is big
18:30to deadlift. And then you just gotta
18:32add some specific kind of training,
18:34some bandage, chains, and stuff like that.
18:36Coach,
18:38besides the 2025 World Games,
18:40do you have any other
18:42tournaments that you are preparing?
18:44Yes, I do. In November,
18:46this is a World Championship. So both are
18:48world's.
18:50One happens every four years and the
18:52other one happens every year.
18:54This is in Romania.
18:56So again, the best of the best
18:58in the whole world are my opponents there.
19:00So, yeah,
19:02I gotta learn from my mistakes and then
19:04get over it and then
19:06come back stronger.
19:08Coach Reggie, before we say goodbye,
19:10do you have a goal for 2025?
19:12Maybe as an athlete
19:14and also personally.
19:18If anything,
19:20is that
19:22consistency
19:24and to really work on the parts
19:26that I need to strengthen and to
19:28be good. And I think also to be
19:30more kind
19:32and then also
19:34be strict to me and
19:36things that I do.
19:38And before we
19:40say goodbye to
19:42Coach Reggie, do you have
19:44a message for our sports fans
19:46and also to the youth
19:48who dreams to be like you?
19:50Whatever
19:52you want to start,
19:54whatever kind of sport it is,
19:56just try it. That's the first thing
19:58you'll do is to get there
20:00and then do it and then
20:04find it for yourself if you want it
20:06or not. And then
20:08from there, if you want it,
20:10commit. And if you don't
20:12like it, don't be
20:14discouraged.
20:16Just because
20:18you don't put the effort,
20:20maybe it's not the sport that you
20:22really want to do.
20:24Once
20:26you like that sport, once you want to do it,
20:28you want to go in there and you liked it,
20:30commit.
20:32Stay there as long as you can
20:34because it needs commitment and
20:36consistency to achieve
20:38at least
20:40anything that would
20:42separate you from being just good to great.
20:44Okay.
20:46Maraming salamat
20:48kay Coach Reggie Ramirez. Pero
20:50teammates, huwag muna kayong BBQ
20:52dahil magbabalik pa kami dito sa
20:54PPV Sports.
